Concept

Santander Private Banking is the private bank of the Banco Santander group inside the global Wealth Management & Insurance division. Type: a private bank of a universal group (NYSE/Euronext: SAN) with a rare-for-Europeans American axis: Miami has operated since 1979. The division's global head is Javier García-Carranza (since May 2024); the global head of private banking is Alfonso del Castillo (Miami-based); in Spain the unit has been led since September 2024 by Víctor Allende (hired from CaixaBank).

History and evolution

The group was founded in 1857; the Geneva bank dates to 1988 (now Banco Santander International SA); Miami to 1979. UK private banking launched in 2016; in 2021 it acquired Indosuez's Miami business (~$4.3bn of client assets). In 2024–2025 the unit was reinforced with hires from CaixaBank and Julius Baer, including global head of family office Carmen Gutiérrez; in 2026 it launched digital advisory funds and mandates with BlackRock, J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs AM, plus a dedicated UHNW family entity, Beyond Wealth.

Scale at 30 June 2026: private-banking client assets of €380bn (+15%) across ~302,000 clients; WM&I division assets of €581bn.

Regulation

  • Banco de España / ECB, CNMV — Banco Santander S.A. (Spain, ~59 private-banking centres);
  • FINMA — Banco Santander International SA (Geneva, Zurich branch) with booking points in the DIFC and ADGM and a Bahamas office;
  • Federal Reserve — Banco Santander International (Miami), an Edge Act corporation;
  • PRA / FCA — Santander Private Banking UK;
  • local regulators in Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Argentina.

Source of funds and compliance

The international business is built on non-residents: Latin American clients booked in the US, Switzerland or the Bahamas; the standard source-of-funds and source-of-wealth file applies, plus CRS/FATCA and, in the US, Fed oversight and BSA rules. No public enforcement specific to private banking was identified (group episodes — such as the FCA's £107.8m fine in 2022 over UK business banking — do not concern the unit).

Who it serves

  • Spain: officially — private-banking centres for fortunes above €500,000;
  • UK: officially at launch — from £500k of savings and/or £250k of annual income; the top tier for fortunes above £20m;
  • international clients: the full international minimum is unpublished; the Digital Wealth format starts at US$100k;
  • UHNW families — the dedicated Beyond Wealth entity (internal segment above €20m), expanding to Brazil, Switzerland and Miami;
  • Latin American non-residents — the historic specialisation of Miami and Geneva.

Services

Wealth management

  • discretionary and advisory management; from 2026 — mandates with BlackRock, J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs AM (from €2m) and digital advisory funds (from €500k);
  • alternatives and private markets; structured products.

Lending

  • lombard loans and credit advisory;
  • advisory on real-estate transactions between Latin America, Europe and the US.

Wealth planning

  • the global family office (Beyond Wealth), wealth and succession planning.

Poland left the perimeter with the group's 2026 disposal; Luxembourg is fund manufacturing, not booking.

Strengths

  • a rare-for-a-European-group American axis: Miami since 1979 plus the Indosuez book;
  • leadership in Spain and strong Latin American positions;
  • honest tiering: Digital Wealth from US$100k, private banking from €500k, UHNW via Beyond Wealth;
  • ~302,000 private-banking clients and a growing network.

Where it does not fit

  • clients who want a published international minimum — it is undisclosed;
  • those counting on FDIC in Miami: BSI is an Edge Act corporation outside insurance;
  • clients in Asia — no direct private banking;
  • portfolios centred on crypto assets.

Santander Private Banking is the Spanish leader with a transatlantic Miami–Geneva axis and a fast-growing UHNW format; the trade-offs are the unpublished international threshold and the uninsured status of the Miami entity.

Q/A

Entry and geography

What minimum capital does Santander Private Banking require?

In Spain officially from €500,000; in the UK at launch — £500k of savings and/or £250k of annual income. The international minimum is unpublished; the Digital Wealth format starts at US$100,000; the Beyond Wealth UHNW format targets families above €20m.

Where is a Latin American non-resident's money booked?

Across three axes: Miami (Banco Santander International, Fed-supervised but without FDIC), Geneva (Banco Santander International SA, esisuisse) and the Bahamas. The choice depends on residence, currencies and products — agree it with the banker.

What does the deposit guarantee cover?

Spain — FGD €100,000; Switzerland — esisuisse CHF 100,000; UK — FSCS; Santander Bank N.A. — FDIC $250,000. Miami's BSI as an Edge Act corporation sits outside FDIC insurance; the Bahamas has no public scheme.

Structure

What is Beyond Wealth?

A separate entity launched in 2026 for UHNW families (an internal threshold above €20m) with family-office-type services; the format is being extended from Spain to Brazil, Switzerland and Miami. The global practice is led by Carmen Gutiérrez, who joined from Julius Baer.

Did Santander buy part of Indosuez?

Yes: in 2021 the group acquired Indosuez's Miami wealth business (~$4.3bn of client assets) and folded it into Banco Santander International. It strengthened the Miami axis for Latin American non-residents.
