Concept

Itaú Private Bank is the private-banking brand of the Itaú Unibanco group, not a separate legal entity: onshore clients in Brazil are served through Banco Itaú Unibanco S.A., while offshore booking runs through subsidiaries in Miami, Zurich and the Bahamas. The bank styles itself the largest private bank in Latin America and cites a 31 % share of the Brazilian market (Anbima basis, bank-cited). Assets under management reached R$1 trillion in November 2025 — the first Brazilian institution at that mark, roughly 71 % booked in Brazil and 29 % offshore — and R$1.1 trillion by May 2026. The offshore book is estimated at about R$300 billion, two-thirds US-booked and one-third in Switzerland (reported). Fernando Beyruti has been global head since the role was created in January 2022 (also chairman of Banco Itaú (Suisse) SA since March 2025); Percy Moreira heads Itaú Private International and Itaú USA (since July 2022); Stefan Jenni is CEO in Zurich.

History and evolution

  • 2006–2007 — acquisition of BankBoston Brazil.
  • 3 November 2008 — Itaú–Unibanco merger announced.
  • 2010 — full Swiss licence: Banco Itaú (Suisse).

  • 2011 — Chilean joint venture (MCC), later Itaú Private Bank Chile.
  • 2022 — Beyruti appointed global head; stake acquired in Avenue.
  • August 2023 — sale of the Argentine retail business to Banco Macro agreed.
  • 2024 — Addepar partnership and launch of Itaú Consultoria (fee-based advisory for clients with R$100 million in liquidity; by 2026 about half of private clients on fee-based models — reported).
  • 2024–2025 — hiring waves from Julius Baer Brasil (12 professionals) and Credit Suisse/UBS (six fiduciary hires).
  • November 2025 — R$1 trillion AUM announced.
  • January 2026 — indirect majority control of Avenue.
  • August 2026 — Uruguay office opened (reported US$2 million minimum); Chile and Paraguay targeted by end-2026.

Regulation

The Brazilian entity is supervised by the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB) and the CVM. In Miami, Banco Itaú International operates as an Edge Act corporation supervised by the Federal Reserve, and Itaú International Securities is an SEC/FINRA broker-dealer and investment adviser. In Zurich, Banco Itaú (Suisse) SA has held a full Swiss banking licence (FINMA) since 2010. Itaú Bank & Trust Bahamas is a non-resident bank & trust licensee of the Central Bank of The Bahamas. On 14 August 2026 the OCC granted preliminary conditional approval for Itaú Bank, National Association (Miami, fiduciary powers, initial capital US$507 million); it will absorb the Edge Act entity, with FDIC insurance and Federal Reserve membership as preconditions before opening.

Compliance context: CADE, July 2018 — R$21 million cease-and-desist settlement over Redecard card-acquiring practices; CVM, August 2024 — temporary administrative suspension of portfolio-manager registrations for dozens of market professionals including Beyruti over late filings (a documentation issue); Receita Federal — contested R$18.7 billion tax assessment over the 2008–09 merger structure (the bank classifies loss risk as "remote" and contests); FINRA, 2011 — US$10,000 fine for Itaú BBA USA Securities (trade reporting); CADE, May 2026 — new administrative proceeding over alleged blocking of cash-in to rival digital wallets (ongoing, no penalty).

Source of wealth

The core clientele is business owners and industrial or agribusiness fortunes, senior executives, multi-generational families and real-estate wealth; expansion into interior agro regions is growing. As with peers, onboarding requires a documented source of funds, refreshed in periodic reviews.

Who it serves

Wealthy Brazilian and Latin American families with investments from R$10 million (reported), entrepreneurs post-exit, agribusiness groups and families with international asset structures needing multi-jurisdiction booking and succession planning. For fortunes of roughly US$200 million and above, the Itaú Family Office applies (reported).

Services

Banking: accounts, cards, FX and the multi-currency Global Wallet. Investments: funds, fixed income, equities, COE structured products, pension products and IPO access; open architecture with 40+ third-party managers. Alternatives and private markets: an exclusive Brazil partnership with Brown Advisory (from January 2026) and an expanded iCapital platform (February 2026). Credit: lombard lending and liquidity lending, real-estate loans, agribusiness finance and cross-border collateralized lending. Wealth planning: estate and succession, pre-immigration and family governance. Fee-based advisory via Itaú Consultoria; the Itaú Family Office; trust and fiduciary services via the Bahamas. Assets can be booked across four booking centres.

Strengths

Scale: R$1.1 trillion AUM (May 2026), 15 offices in Brazil and more than 1,000 professionals. A full in-group range from current accounts to trusts. Four booking centres, including an owned Swiss licence. Market leadership in Brazil (31 % share, Anbima basis, bank-cited). Awards: PWM Best Private Bank in Brazil 2024 and Euromoney Brazil best for HNW 2026.

Where it falls short

At regional level, recent trade-press awards favoured BTG Pactual (Euromoney LatAm best private bank 2025). Clients who require FDIC insurance should note that the current Edge Act entity is not FDIC-insured. The last official client count is 11,500+ families (2013); no newer official figure exists. One Valor piece (March 2026) cited a "R$1.5 trillion" perimeter — an inconsistent figure; R$1.1 trillion (May 2026) is the headline.

Itaú Private Bank is a large, fully integrated private-banking platform inside Brazil's biggest bank, with four booking centres and a family-office layer; its main constraints are the limits of deposit-insurance coverage outside the FGC and limited public disclosure on thresholds and client counts.

Q/A

What is the minimum to join Itaú Private Bank?

The official site publishes no threshold; 2024–2026 press consistently reports a minimum of about R$10 million invested. For the Itaú Family Office a threshold of roughly US$200 million is reported.

Is Itaú Private Bank a separate bank?

No. It is the private-banking brand of Itaú Unibanco: onshore clients are served by Banco Itaú Unibanco S.A., and offshore booking runs through legal entities in Miami, Zurich and the Bahamas.

Are deposits insured?

In Brazil the FGC covers up to R$250,000 per CPF/CNPJ per institution, capped at R$1 million per four-year period. Offshore assets fall outside the FGC: Switzerland's esisuisse covers up to CHF 100,000, the US Edge Act entity is not FDIC-insured, and the Bahamas has no coverage for foreign-currency private deposits.

Where can assets be booked?

In four centres: Brazil (BCB/CVM), Miami (Federal Reserve; SEC/FINRA), Zurich (FINMA, since 2010) and the Bahamas (trust hub). In August 2026 the OCC gave preliminary conditional approval to the Itaú Bank N.A. charter in Miami.

Who leads the franchise?

Fernando Beyruti is global head (since January 2022); Percy Moreira leads Itaú Private International and Itaú USA (since July 2022); Stefan Jenni is CEO in Zurich.
