Concept

BTG Pactual is Latin America's largest investment bank with a dedicated Wealth Management & Personal Banking segment (partner Rogério Pessoa): proprietary private banking, a multi-family-office platform and the digital channel. Type: a meritocratic partnership listed on B3 (BPAC11); the controlling shareholder and chairman is André Esteves, the CEO is Roberto Sallouti. Important: the group has no Swiss bank — BSI, bought from Generali in 2014–2015, was sold to EFG International in 2016; today's international booking is Luxembourg and the US.

History and evolution

Pactual was founded in 1983, sold to UBS in 2006 and bought back in 2009 — creating BTG Pactual; the IPO came in 2012. In November 2015 Esteves was arrested in the Lava Jato case, stepped down and was acquitted in 2018 by the Federal Court of the Federal District, at the prosecution's own request, for lack of sufficient evidence; by 2022 he was back as chairman. Fresh private-banking consolidation: Luxembourg (the former FIS Privatbank, 2023), Miami multi-family office Greytown (2024), Julius Baer's Brazilian wealth business (2025, R$60bn of assets) and the JGP platform; the purchase of New York's M.Y. Safra Bank completed on 5 January 2026 — giving the group the national bank BTG Pactual Bank, N.A. (OCC, FDIC); in July 2026 the purchase of HSBC Bank (Uruguay) (~$175m) completed.

Scale at end-2025: wealth-unit assets of R$1.23tn (R$214bn of net new money in the year), ~US$500bn combined with asset management; adjusted group net income of R$16.7bn. Euromoney's "Latin America's best private bank 2025".

Regulation

  • Central Bank of Brazil / CVM — Banco BTG Pactual S.A. (São Paulo);
  • CSSF — BTG Pactual Europe S.A. (Luxembourg, since 2023);
  • OCC — BTG Pactual Bank, N.A. (New York, since January 2026); SEC / FINRA — BTG Pactual US Capital (New York, Miami) and BTG Pactual Asset Management US;
  • CMF — Banco BTG Pactual Chile; SFC — BTG Pactual Colombia; CNBV — the Mexican brokerage; SBS — the Peruvian banking entity (2026); BCU — Uruguay (ex-HSBC).

Source of funds and compliance

Account opening is "subject to analysis"; the standard source-of-funds file applies. Dated episodes: the Esteves arrest and acquittal (2015/2018); a Consob fine of €350k over a 2007 insider-trading matter (2012); a CVM proceeding over unit manipulation in 2015–2016 (settlement proposals rejected by the committee in 2021). BSI's pre-acquisition legacy (1MDB, US taxes) went into price adjustments with EFG, settled in 2017.

Who it serves

  • Brazil: per industry estimates, private banking from ~R$3m (unofficial; the ANBIMA segment floor is R$1m);
  • Latin American non-residents — booking in Luxembourg (BTG Pactual Europe) and the US (a national bank since 2026);
  • family offices — the MFO platform after the Julius Baer Brazil and JGP deals (R$100bn);
  • clients wanting private markets and pre-IPO allocations — a signature strength of the house.

Services

Wealth management

  • advisory and discretionary management, exclusive funds, an open architecture; structured products (COE);
  • private markets and pre-IPO allocations.

Lending

Family and digital

  • the multi-family office with consolidated reporting across custodians;
  • the BTG Digital/BTG+ platform and US global accounts since 2023.

There is no Swiss presence (BSI was sold to EFG in 2016); in Europe the group keeps offices in London, Lisbon and Madrid.

Strengths

  • Latin America's largest investment platform alongside the private bank;
  • a freshly assembled international booking map: Luxembourg + a US national bank (2026);
  • a strong multi-family-office platform after a series of deals;
  • a partnership culture and meritocracy.

Where it does not fit

  • clients needing Swiss booking — absent since 2016;
  • those seeking published thresholds: minimums are undisclosed, entry is "by analysis";
  • clients sensitive to the 2015 Esteves episode (acquitted in 2018);
  • portfolios without a Latin American logic — the house is specialised.

BTG Pactual is the Latin American investment house with a quickly assembled international wing (Luxembourg + the US) and a strong family-office platform; Switzerland has been closed since 2016 — a frequent misconception.

Q/A

Entry and geography

What minimum capital does BTG Pactual require?

Minimums are not officially published; industry estimates for Brazil cite ~R$3m. International accounts in Luxembourg and the US open "subject to analysis". The multi-family office historically gathered tickets of ~R$200m per family (per publications).

Does BTG really have a Swiss bank?

No — that is an outdated fact: BSI was bought from Generali in 2014–2015 and sold to EFG International in 2016. Today's international booking is BTG Pactual Europe in Luxembourg and BTG Pactual Bank, N.A. in New York (since January 2026).

What does the deposit guarantee cover?

Brazil — FGC R$250,000 per CPF/CNPJ (funds and structured notes are outside cover); Luxembourg — FGDL €100,000; US — FDIC $250,000 plus SIPC for brokerage assets. Custody securities remain the client's property.

History

What happened to André Esteves in 2015?

An arrest in November 2015 in the Lava Jato case, resignation and release within weeks; in July 2018 a full acquittal for lack of valid evidence. By 2022 he had returned as chairman and controlling shareholder. The episode is legally closed but remains part of the public profile.

What is the New York bank purchase?

M.Y. Safra Bank: agreed June 2024, Fed approval December 2025, completed 5 January 2026 — giving the group BTG Pactual Bank, N.A., an OCC-regulated national bank with FDIC protection. It anchors US booking for Latin American clients.
