Concept
HDFC Bank Private Banking is the wealth arm of India's largest private-sector bank (BSE/NSE: HDFCBANK; NYSE ADSs: HDB), formed in its current scale by the July 2023 merger with HDFC Ltd — the largest deal in Indian corporate history (~$40bn). Type: a private bank inside a universal group; the unit sits with Group Head Rakesh K. Singh (private banking, international banking, financial institutions and BaaS). MD & CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan's term ends on 26 October 2026; the RBI has approved Anup Bagchi (ex-ICICI) as successor — the bank's first external CEO.
History and evolution
Founded in 1994 after the RBI's private-bank licensing; it absorbed Times Bank (2000) and Centurion Bank of Punjab (2008); the HDFC Ltd merger completed on 1 July 2023. Fresh moves: a Singapore branch with an MAS licence (October 2024), the HDB Financial Services IPO (2025), a 1:1 bonus issue (August 2025), and a new TRV route into Imperia (October 2025). The year's management backdrop: chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned in March 2026; in September 2025 the DFSA barred the DIFC branch from soliciting new clients amid alleged mis-selling of Credit Suisse AT1 bonds (existing clients unaffected; three employees were dismissed after an internal probe in March 2026).
Unit scale: close to ₹7 lakh crore under management across 86,000+ families in India and overseas (May 2026); Euromoney named it India's safest private bank 2026.
Regulation
- RBI — HDFC Bank Limited (a domestic systemically important bank); SEBI — the group's investment lines;
- MAS — the Singapore branch (since 2024); HKMA — Hong Kong; CBB — Bahrain; DFSA — the DIFC (since 2014; since September 2025 no new-client solicitation);
- IFSCA — the GIFT City IBU (since 2017).
Source of funds and compliance
Entry runs on programme criteria with family account linking; standard RBI KYC and the source-of-funds file apply. Dated RBI sanctions: ₹1 crore (September 2024), ₹75 lakh (March 2025, KYC), ₹91 lakh (November 2025) — administrative process episodes; separately, the DFSA measure against the DIFC branch (September 2025).
Who it serves
- tiers (official): Imperia — from a ₹10 lakh monthly average savings balance or ₹30 lakh of combined deposits (from October 2025 also a TRV route from ₹1 crore); Infiniti — the invite-only top tier: TRV from ₹5 crore;
- HNW non-residents: Imperia Global — from a ₹25 lakh balance or ₹2 crore TRV or ₹50 lakh of inward remittances in a year;
- there is no separately published "private banking" bar: the documented top benchmark is Infiniti (₹5 crore TRV);
- families: group account linking under the programme rules.
Services
Wealth management
- RM-led advisory plus the SmartWealth digital channel (850k clients); the product shelf widened to 31 items;
- private markets and discretionary mandates via the group: PMS and AIFs at HDFC AMC, offshore funds at HDFC AMC International (IFSC).
Lending
- loans against securities (the bank's first retail lending product back in 1998) and against property.
The international perimeter
- NRE/NRO/FCNR accounts, offshore deposits and trade finance via GIFT City; Imperia Global for NRIs; representative offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, London and Nairobi.

| Singapore | branch | MAS (wholesale, since October 2024) | Asia point for NRIs |
| UAE | DIFC branch | DFSA; since September 2025 no new-client solicitation | servicing existing clients |

Strengths
- the country's largest private bank with an official unit figure: ~₹7 lakh crore across 86,000 families;
- a transparent tier ladder with published criteria (Imperia/Infiniti);
- HDFC AMC's group capabilities with offshore funds in the IFSC;
- a strong SmartWealth digital practice.
Where it does not fit
- DIFC clients: the branch takes no new clients until the measure is lifted;
- those seeking a separate "private banking" bar: none exists — the top tier is the invite-only Infiniti from ₹5 crore TRV;
- clients outside the India logic and the diaspora;
- those sensitive to the 2025–2026 management turbulence (the chairman's exit, the October 2026 CEO change).
HDFC Bank Wealth is India's largest private bank with an honest tier ladder; the year's weak spots are the DFSA measure in Dubai and the leadership transition.
Q/A
Entry and tiers
What minimum capital is required?
The bank publishes no separate "private banking" bar. The documented ladder: Imperia — from a ₹10 lakh monthly average savings balance or ₹30 lakh of combined deposits (from October 2025 also a TRV route from ₹1 crore); the top tier Infiniti is invite-only, TRV from ₹5 crore. Circulating "₹2–3 crore" figures are not officially confirmed.
What happened at the Dubai branch?
In September 2025 the DFSA barred the DIFC branch from soliciting and onboarding new clients amid alleged mis-selling of Credit Suisse AT1 bonds; existing clients are unaffected. Three employees were dismissed after an internal probe in March 2026. The measure stands until lifted — the status is worth re-checking.
What does deposit insurance cover?
The DICGC — ₹500,000 per depositor per bank including interest; offshore deposits (branches, GIFT City) sit outside the domestic scheme. Securities and fund units remain the client's property.
Management
Who leads the bank after Jagdishan?
Sashidhar Jagdishan's term ends on 26 October 2026; the RBI has approved Anup Bagchi (formerly executive director at ICICI Bank) for three years from 27 October 2026 — the bank's first external CEO. Keki Mistry is the interim chairman after Atanu Chakraborty's resignation.
What did the HDFC Ltd merger bring?
The 1 July 2023 deal (~$40bn, all-stock) — India's largest corporate transaction — brought the mortgage book and balance-sheet scale; for the wealth unit it means a channel of mortgage clients and cross-selling.
