Concept

Burgundy Private is the private-banking platform of Axis Bank for HNI and UHNI clients, launched on 2 December 2019. Axis Bank is India's third-largest private-sector bank by assets, behind HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank: as of March 2026 the group reported total assets of ₹18,86,850 crore (1 crore = 10 million rupees) and FY26 net profit of ₹24,457 crore (−7% on one-time prudential provisioning). Burgundy Private AUM grew from ₹17,700 crore in March 2020 to ₹2,39,545 crore as of 31 March 2026 (+13% YoY; ≈US$27bn per the June 2026 Hurun release), after peaking at ₹2,46,610 crore in September 2025. The platform serves 15,249 families (as of 30 September 2025) across 42+ locations with a team of about 250 private bankers.

History and evolution

  • 3 December 1993 — incorporated as UTI Bank, promoted by UTI, LIC and GIC.
  • 2006 — first overseas branch opened in Singapore.
  • 30 July 2007 — renamed Axis Bank.
  • 2010 — acquired Enam Securities, which became Axis Capital and Axis Securities.
  • 2014 — Burgundy affluent programme launched (segment ladder: Prestige → Priority → Burgundy → Burgundy Private).
  • November 2017 — offshore IBU opened in GIFT City.
  • 2 December 2019 — Burgundy Private launched.
  • 2021 — partnership with Hurun India begins: the annual "Burgundy Private Hurun India 500" list, fifth edition in June 2026.
  • 30 March 2022 — acquisition of Citi's India consumer business announced; 1 March 2023 — completed at ₹11,603 crore (~3m customers, ~2.5m cards).
  • 2024 — expansion into 15 new Tier-2 cities.

Regulation

Axis Bank Ltd is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India and listed on the NSE and BSE (SEBI oversight). Burgundy Private's investment advisory and family-office services, including PMS, are delivered through Axis Securities Ltd, a SEBI-registered broker. Axis Asset Management (average AUM ₹3.61 lakh crore, the country's #8 fund house) and Axis Trustee Services (a SEBI-registered debenture trustee) support investment and estate/succession structures. Internationally: a DIFC (Dubai) branch under a DFSA Category-1 wholesale licence held since 1 April 2007; a Singapore branch with MAS merchant-bank status; and a GIFT City IBU supervised by IFSCA. Axis Bank UK Ltd was placed into members' voluntary liquidation on 9 December 2024 (licence cancellation approved 24 October 2024), and the Shanghai, Colombo and Hong Kong offices were closed in 2020–21 — the international business is consolidated into GIFT City.

Compliance context: RBI penalties — ₹90.92 lakh (2 November 2023: KYC record-keeping, recovery-agent conduct); ₹1.91 crore (3 September 2024: impermissible subsidiary business, deposit/KYC directions); ₹37.32 lakh (February 2025: FEMA contraventions); ₹29.60 lakh (29 April 2025: unauthorised entries through internal accounts) — all per official RBI orders. In SEBI's Axis Mutual Fund front-running case, the July 2026 final order barred the former chief dealer for seven years and penalised 21 entities; the case concerns the AMC subsidiary, not Burgundy Private directly.

Source of wealth

The core clientele is entrepreneurs and SME owners, professionals and senior executives; NRI clients are served via GIFT City, and Tier-2/Tier-3 business families are a named expansion focus. As a regulated bank, Axis verifies each client's source of funds during onboarding.

Who it serves

The platform targets Indian HNIs and UHNIs with a total relationship value (TRV) of ₹5 crore and above: business owners and their families, successful professionals and executives, and non-resident Indians who need offshore solutions through GIFT City. A separate focus is entrepreneurial families in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where the bank is actively expanding.

Services

  • research-based investment advisory;
  • family-office solutions, family governance, succession and estate planning (via Axis Securities and Axis Trustee);
  • portfolio management services (PMS);
  • lombard lending — loans against securities;
  • personal and corporate banking;
  • tax and real-estate advisory;
  • the "One Axis" ecosystem: Axis Capital investment banking and Axis Finance NBFC;
  • NRI services;
  • offshore solutions via GIFT City: multi-currency deposits and international financing (in March 2025 Axis became the first Indian bank to execute aircraft financing through the GIFT IBU).

Strengths

  • Scale: AUM of ₹2,39,545 crore and 15,249 families — one of India's largest private-banking platforms.
  • Full "One Axis" group: bank, broker, asset manager, trustee, investment bank and NBFC within one perimeter.
  • Offshore via GIFT City under IFSCA: multi-currency deposits; a GIFT City fund suite for HNW/NRI clients was planned for early 2026, according to published reports.
  • Growing team: about 250 private bankers, with 50 more hires planned, according to published reports; expansion into Tier-2 cities.
  • Strong brand: partnership with Hurun India (the "Burgundy Private Hurun India 500" list).

Where it falls short

  • The entry threshold of ₹5 crore TRV excluding demat is higher than some rivals'; demat holdings are not counted.
  • The international network has been reduced: the UK, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Colombo are closed — the global footprint is limited to Dubai, Singapore and GIFT City.
  • Group-level events (RBI penalties; SEBI's Axis Mutual Fund case) warrant attention during due diligence, though they do not affect Burgundy Private directly.
  • The vertical has seen leadership changes: former Burgundy Private head Apurva Sahijwani left in May 2024 for Avendus Wealth; published reports identify Sonali Dahiya as the current business head under Arnika Dixit, whose official title is Group Head, Wealth Management & Affluent Banking.

Overall, Burgundy Private is a large, fast-growing full-cycle private-banking platform for Indian HNIs and UHNIs with an offshore window in GIFT City. It suits entrepreneurs and families with capital of ₹5 crore and above who are focused primarily on the Indian market with elements of offshore servicing.
