Concept
Syz Group is a Geneva family banking group with three lines: Banque Syz SA (the private bank, Geneva), Syz Capital (alternatives and private markets, Pfäffikon, 65% group-owned) and Syz Asset Management (institutional fixed income, Zurich). Type: a pure-play private bank in family hands — the Financière Syz SA holding is ~92% owned by Eric and Suzanne Syz via Orion Holding and Argos Holding, and unlisted. Founded in 1996; the group CEO is Eric Syz, and since 1 February 2026 the bank has been led by his son Nicolas Syz.
History and evolution
Founded in 1996 by Eric Syz, Alfredo Piacentini and Paolo Luban. The co-founders exited in 2014, leaving Eric Syz in near-total control. In 2015 the group bought Royal Bank of Canada (Suisse) SA — including the Johannesburg representative office; in 2020 the Luxembourg Oyster fund range was sold to iM Global Partner and the Bahamas bank left via a management buyout; in 2021 it acquired Zurich EAM BHA Partners. Departing footprint: the Dubai and Miami representative offices no longer appear in the 2025 annual report, and the Montevideo subsidiary was sold to management in 2025.
The digital line: trading and custody of seven tokens since 2024; in March 2025 Syz Capital launched the BTC Alpha Fund — a bitcoin-denominated fund of crypto hedge funds (Coinbase as prime broker and custodian).
Group assets under management reached CHF 27.9bn at end-2025 (+8%) on CHF 1.64bn of net new money; group CET1 is 24.6% with 268 staff.
Regulation
- FINMA — Banque Syz SA (Geneva, Zurich, Lugano, Locarno), Syz Asset Management AG and Syz Capital AG (manager-of-collective-assets licences);
- FCA — Syz Asset Management (Europe) Ltd (London, FRN 666766);
- CSSF — Syz Capital's fund structures in Luxembourg;
- representative offices: Istanbul (Turkish licence 2020) and Johannesburg (registered with the SARB Prudential Authority).
Source of funds and compliance
Non-residents are accepted (the site excludes US persons and Canada except four provinces); the standard file applies — documented source of funds and source of wealth, CRS/FATCA, usually one in-person Swiss meeting. Dated episode: on 24 September 2020 FINMA issued a public reprimand of Banque Syz for AML due-diligence breaches on a client linked to an Angolan PEP; no fine was imposed — the bank had self-reported, and an independent auditor was appointed to verify remediation.
Who it serves
- HNW clients: no official minimum is published; industry estimates cite entry from CHF 500,000;
- fortunes of CHF 10m+ — the multi-custody format: assets stay at the third-party custodian while Syz manages them (per Eric Syz);
- external asset managers — the Syz Gate desk;
- alternatives investors: private markets, litigation finance, hedge funds and digital assets via Syz Capital;
- clients in Turkey and Southern Africa — via the Istanbul and Johannesburg representative offices.
Services
Wealth management
- discretionary and advisory management on an open architecture;

Strengths
- family control and compactness: fast decisions, no group bureaucracy;
- a combination rare for a private bank: classic management plus a real digital-assets line;
- multi-custody — the client is not forced to move assets into the bank;
- strong capitalisation: CET1 of 24.6%.
Where it does not fit
- US persons and most Canadian residents — the site explicitly excludes these jurisdictions;
- those who need booking centres beyond Switzerland — deposits sit in Geneva only;
- clients sensitive to the public record: the 2020 FINMA reprimand is openly available;
- smaller fortunes — the indicative entry point is around CHF 500,000 (unofficial).
Syz is a compact family house with an entrepreneurial character: Swiss booking, multi-custody for large fortunes and an alternatives-and-digital line that is unusually deep for its size.
Q/A
Entry and format
What minimum capital does Banque Syz require?
No official minimum is published; industry references cite entry from CHF 500,000. For fortunes of CHF 10m+ there is a multi-custody format: your assets stay with your custodian while Syz manages them under mandate.
Does the bank accept US residents?
No: the group's site excludes US persons, as well as Canada (except Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta). International clients from other jurisdictions are served through Swiss booking with an in-person meeting.
Is this a full crypto bank?
No — it is a classic private bank with a digital option: trading and custody of seven tokens at the bank, and crypto hedge-fund vehicles at Syz Capital (SyzCrest; the BTC Alpha Fund with Coinbase as custodian). Crypto-origin wealth is a separate compliance conversation at entry.
Family and supervision
What does the 2020 FINMA reprimand mean?
FINMA publicly reprimanded the bank for due-diligence breaches on a client linked to an Angolan PEP; no fine was imposed — the bank self-reported, and an independent auditor verified remediation. It is a process episode, not an asset-safety issue.
Is the bank being sold to outside investors?
No. At end-2025 ~92% of the holding's votes sit with Eric and Suzanne Syz, and the founder has publicly ruled out a sale. Nicolas Syz taking over the bank in February 2026 is family succession, not a transaction.
