Concept

Edmond de Rothschild is a Geneva investment house combining a private bank and an asset manager. Type: family-owned and unlisted — 100% held through Edmond de Rothschild Holding SA (the majority of votes sits with Ariane de Rothschild and her four daughters); the group left the SIX exchange in 2019 and consolidated all banking under the Swiss entity Edmond de Rothschild (Suisse) SA. Founded in Paris in 1953 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild. Not to be confused with Rothschild & Co, the separate firm of the family's Anglo-French branch. Group CEO is Ariane de Rothschild (since March 2023); the chairman is Yves Perrier (former Amundi CEO).

History and evolution

A Geneva bank since 1965 and in Luxembourg since 1969. Benjamin de Rothschild took over in 1997; in 2019 the family bought out minorities and delisted. Benjamin died on 15 January 2021; after a short tenure of CEO François Pauly, Ariane de Rothschild became group CEO in March 2023.

Recent moves: a DIFC advisory office opened in 2023; in February 2025 the stake in London multi-family office Hottinger & Co was raised to 70%; the sale of Luxembourg fund asset servicing to Apex collapsed in August 2025 and was replaced by an expanded CACEIS partnership (October 2026).

Assets under management hit a record CHF 198bn at end-2025 (+8%) on CHF 10bn of net inflows; more than 2,700 staff.

Regulation

  • FINMA — Edmond de Rothschild (Suisse) SA (Geneva; branches in Lugano, Fribourg, Lausanne, a Zurich office);
  • CSSF — Edmond de Rothschild (Europe) SA (Luxembourg) with branches in Belgium, Spain, Portugal and Italy;
  • ACPR — Edmond de Rothschild (France) SA; ACPR/CCAF — the Monaco bank;
  • FCA — Hottinger & Co Limited (London);
  • DFSA — Edmond de Rothschild (Middle East) Ltd, Category 4 advisory licence;
  • in Israel — Edmond de Rothschild Portfolio Management (Israel) Ltd (Tel Aviv).

Source of funds and compliance

No public onboarding rulebook; the segment standard applies — documented source of funds and source of wealth and CRS/FATCA self-certification. The dated supervisory backdrop is substantial: a US DOJ Swiss Bank Program resolution (2015, US$45.2m); a CSSF fine of €8.9m (2017) and a court-approved €25m settlement in May 2025 over 1MDB — EdR (Europe) became the first Luxembourg bank convicted of money laundering; an AMF composition administrative of €550,000 (November 2025) covering the French private-equity arm; in March 2026 the French financial prosecutor searched the Paris HQ in a probe targeting a former employee (the bank is cooperating). For clients the practical outcome is deep entry diligence.

Who it serves

  • HNW and UHNW clients: no official minimum is published; industry references cite around US$2m for the Swiss bank (unofficial);
  • non-residents booking in Geneva, Luxembourg, Paris or Monaco;
  • families — the Hottinger multi-family office in London (200+ families at the time of the deal);
  • investors focused on sustainable and impact strategies — a signature theme of the house;
  • external asset managers — a dedicated desk (~50 professionals across seven countries).

Services

Wealth management

  • discretionary and advisory portfolio management;
  • sustainable and impact strategies as the baseline.

Lending

Investment products and private markets

  • real estate: EdR REIM with €13.7bn under management;
  • BRIDGE infrastructure debt (€6.5bn) and private equity (€4.6bn);
  • asset management (EdR AM, €107bn) for institutional clients.

Entities and booking centres

Asia and Latin America are outside the perimeter: the Hong Kong branch closed in 2016, Montevideo in 2022.

Strengths

  • family ownership and a generational horizon rather than quarterly pressure;
  • rare depth in real assets: real estate, infrastructure debt, private equity;
  • a full European booking perimeter: Switzerland, Luxembourg, France, Monaco;
  • a London multi-family office authorised for US clients.

Where it does not fit

  • clients in Asia or Latin America without a European link — no direct booking centres there;
  • those sensitive to the supervisory record: the 1MDB settlement (€25m, 2025) and the 2026 PNF search in Paris are part of the public profile;
  • portfolios centred on crypto assets — no dedicated offering;
  • smaller fortunes — the indicative threshold is around US$2m (unofficial).

Edmond de Rothschild is a family-owned European house with a strong real-assets line and four European booking centres; the trade-offs are the absence of Asia and a visible supervisory trail of recent years.

Q/A

Entry and booking

What minimum capital does Edmond de Rothschild require?

The bank publishes no official minimum. Industry references cite around US$2 million for the Swiss entity and €1–3 million for France; exact terms are agreed individually and depend on residence and the wealth structure.

How does Edmond de Rothschild differ from Rothschild & Co?

They are separate firms of different family branches. Edmond de Rothschild is the Geneva group of the Swiss branch, family-owned and unlisted; Rothschild & Co is the Anglo-French firm of the Paris branch, taken private in 2023. They compete for clients and for the family brand.

What does the deposit guarantee cover?

Switzerland — esisuisse CHF 100,000; Luxembourg and its branches — FGDL €100,000; France and Monaco — FGDR €100,000. Custody securities are not covered by the schemes but are returned to the owner in a bank failure.

Supervisory backdrop

What happened in the 1MDB case?

The bank's Luxembourg entity processed transactions linked to the 1MDB fund; after a €8.9m CSSF fine in 2017, a court approved a €25m settlement in May 2025 — the first money-laundering conviction of a Luxembourg bank. The bank completed its 2016–2019 remediation plan.

Was the March 2026 PNF search about the bank's clients?

No. The search of the Paris HQ relates to a corruption probe against a former employee (who worked there in 2014–2016); the bank is cooperating and faces no charges. There are no direct consequences for clients.
