Concept

REYL & Cie is a Geneva private bank, wholly owned since 30 January 2026 by Fideuram – Intesa Sanpaolo Private Banking (the private banking division of the Intesa Sanpaolo group), and since 2 September 2026 the legal entity has been renamed Intesa Sanpaolo Wealth Management SA, operating as Intesa Sanpaolo Wealth Management Suisse. Type: a private bank inside a large Italian banking group. Headquarters at Rue du Rhône 4, Geneva; the CEO is Riccardo Barbarini (since January 2026).

History and evolution

The bank grew out of Dominique Reyl's 1973 consulting firm; it received a FINMA banking licence in 2010. In 2021 Fideuram acquired 69%, with Intesa contributing its Swiss bank Intesa Sanpaolo Private Bank (Suisse) Morval, merged into REYL in January 2022; the same year it bought 40% of Geneva manager 1875 Finance. In 2023 it acquired fund administrator Carnegie Fund Services and sold 51% of impact manager Asteria Obviam to Man Group. The perimeter was then pruned: Singapore closed in 2025, Malta and Luxembourg wound down. On 30 January 2026 Fideuram bought the remaining 24% from the founders, reaching 100%; François Reyl and Pasha Bakhtiar left the leadership.

Assets under management stand at CHF 34bn including minority stakes at end-2025, with around 340 staff across six locations.

Regulation

  • FINMA — Intesa Sanpaolo Wealth Management SA (Geneva; Zurich and Lugano branches);
  • FCA — REYL & Co (UK) LLP (London, advisory);
  • DFSA — REYL Finance (MEA) Ltd (DIFC, fund management);
  • CNV — Intesa Sanpaolo Private Argentina SA (Buenos Aires, advisory agent No. 1045);
  • SEC — REYL Overseas AG (Zurich) as a registered adviser for US clients.

Source of funds and compliance

Non-residents are accepted; the standard file applies: documented source of funds and source of wealth, beneficial-owner checks, CRS/FATCA self-certification. Dated backdrop: the French case over the Cahuzac episode was closed by a CRPC plea in April 2023 (a cumulative €5.75m fine for 2009–2013 facts). In April 2025 press reports described a FINMA enforcement probe into AML controls and the closure of roughly 300 Russia-linked accounts in January 2024 (reported; the bank declined to comment). For clients this means deep diligence at entry and during the relationship.

Who it serves

  • HNW clients: no official minimum is published; industry references cite a threshold around CHF/USD/EUR 1m (unofficial);
  • entrepreneurs — the house's historic specialisation in business owners;
  • non-residents booking in Switzerland, including clients from Latin America (the Morval legacy) and the Middle East (the DIFC office);
  • US clients — through SEC-registered REYL Overseas in Zurich;
  • institutions and funds — the Asset Services line (administration, custody, Swiss fund representation).

Services

Wealth management

  • discretionary and advisory portfolio management, execution;
  • lending, including lombard loans and restructuring.

Asset services

  • fund administration and custody, Swiss fund representative and paying-agent functions (strengthened by the Carnegie Fund Services acquisition);
  • a 40% stake in 1875 Finance — access to the external-asset-manager platform.

Corporate line

  • corporate finance moved to the group's investment bank (IMI CIB) from H2 2025; the entity's focus is private wealth and fund services.

Entities and booking centres

After the perimeter clean-up, six locations remain.

Closed or wound down: Singapore (liquidated 2025), Malta, Luxembourg. Hong Kong and Monaco are not in the perimeter.

Strengths

  • full Intesa Sanpaolo ownership: the balance sheet and product shelf of a large banking group;
  • Swiss booking with access for US clients via REYL Overseas — a rare combination;
  • entrepreneurial DNA and the link to the 1875 Finance external-manager platform;
  • fund services (Asset Services) inside the same perimeter as the private bank.

Where it does not fit

  • clients needing booking in Asia or Luxembourg — those points are closed;
  • those sensitive to the public record: the French case (closed 2023) and the reported FINMA probe (2025) are part of the profile;
  • fortunes well below ~CHF 1m — the unofficial entry threshold;
  • portfolios centred on crypto assets — no dedicated offering (the minority stake in digital bank Alpian is a separate story).

The former REYL is becoming the Swiss wing of Intesa Sanpaolo's private banking: less independence, more group backing; for the client it is Swiss booking with an Italian balance sheet behind it.

Q/A

Entry and structure

Does REYL no longer exist?

The Swiss brand has been retired: since 2 September 2026 the bank is called Intesa Sanpaolo Wealth Management SA, wholly owned by Fideuram – Intesa Sanpaolo Private Banking. Legally it is the same FINMA-licensed Geneva bank; client agreements and booking are preserved.

What minimum capital is needed?

There is no official minimum. Industry references cite around CHF/USD/EUR 1 million; for the Middle East office managers focus on ~US$5 million. Admission is decided individually.

What does the deposit guarantee cover?

Deposits are booked at the Swiss bank and covered by esisuisse up to CHF 100,000 per client. The overseas offices take no deposits. Custody securities are segregated and returned to the owner in a bank failure.

Supervisory backdrop

What closed the bank's French case?

A CRPC plea agreement in April 2023: a cumulative €5.75m fine covering 2009–2013 facts (the Cahuzac episode). The case is legally closed; there are no direct consequences for current clients.

Is it true that FINMA is investigating the bank over AML?

In April 2025 Le Monde and OCCRP reported a FINMA enforcement proceeding into AML controls; per the reporting, the bank closed around 300 Russia-linked accounts in January 2024. No FINMA decision had been published at the time of writing; the bank declined to comment.
