Concept
Standard Bank Private Banking is the private-banking franchise of Standard Bank Group, Africa's largest banking group: total assets of R 3.6 trillion (about US$ 216 billion) in FY2025, 19.6 million active clients, and a presence in 21 African countries. The model rests on two pillars. Domestically, Standard Bank Private Banking and Standard Bank Wealth and Investment sit inside the Personal & Private Banking segment (led by Funeka Montjane since 2021). Abroad, Standard Bank Offshore — trading as Standard Bank International — provides offshore banking, lending, investment, fiduciary and wealth services from Jersey, the Isle of Man and Mauritius, plus a distribution team in London. Since 2025 the offshore businesses report to the Chief Executive, Africa Regions and Offshore, Lungisa Fuzile (confirmed 9 September 2025).

- 1 February 2015 — 60% of Standard Bank Plc (London) transferred to ICBC, creating ICBC Standard Bank Plc, a markets bank, not private banking.

Important: contrary to occasional press confusion, the Jersey and Isle of Man offshore banks were not sold or wound down — both operate today and publish results.
Regulation
The Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd is supervised by the SARB Prudential Authority and the FSCA (FSP 11287); the offshore banks answer to the Isle of Man FSA and the Jersey FSC, and the Mauritian entities to the Bank of Mauritius and FSC Mauritius. Compliance record: on 23 January 2014 the UK FCA fined Standard Bank Plc £ 7,640,400 for AML failures on PEP-linked corporate customers (2007–2011); on 16 April 2014 the SARB fined SBSA R 60 million for FICA deficiencies; on 30 November 2015 the SFO concluded England's first-ever DPA — Standard Bank Plc (conduct pre-dating the ICBC deal) paid a US$ 25.2 million penalty plus US$ 7 million compensation to Tanzania; in December 2019 the Prudential Authority imposed R 30 million (R 7.5 million suspended); on 24 January 2025 a R 13 million fine plus six cautions followed a 2022 inspection (the bank says issues are fully remediated, with no finding of facilitating money laundering). In 2010 the JFSC publicly criticised Standard Bank Jersey in a fund-administration matter (it had no fining powers at the time).
Source of wealth
Typical clients: mining and industrial fortunes, business owners across Africa, senior professionals and executives, agricultural wealth, and multi-generational families; diaspora and non-resident clients booking offshore. Like any bank, Standard Bank requests documentation on the source of funds.
Who it serves
South African residents with high regular income; African entrepreneurs needing offshore booking in stable jurisdictions; families with international asset structures and succession needs.
Services
In South Africa: a dedicated private banker plus financial planner, the 24/7 Private Client Centre, discretionary portfolios via Melville Douglas (a DPM boutique founded in 1987, wholly acquired in 2001), stockbroking, structured products, tax-free products, the Shyft forex app, offshore accounts, estate and succession planning, and family-office services. Offshore: multi-currency accounts (GBP/USD/EUR/AUD), notice and fixed savings, personal lending — including UK property loans for non-residents and lombard lending secured against assets — discretionary portfolio services, stockbroking, structured products, an international investment platform, and fiduciary, trust and family-office services via the Jersey and Mauritius trust companies. Booking is spread across several booking centres.

Strengths
- Scale: Africa's largest bank, 19.6 million active clients, 21 African countries.
- Group assets under administration and management of R 1.8 trillion (+15% in FY2025).
- A domestic-plus-offshore combination: single access to multi-currency accounts, lending and trusts.
- Awards (reported): Global Finance Best Private Bank Africa and South Africa (January 2025); Euromoney Africa's Best Private Bank 2026 (April 2026), including family-office categories.
Where it falls short
- Clients without an African connection: the group's focus is continental markets.
- Those seeking a Swiss or Asian platform: booking is limited to Jersey, the Isle of Man and Mauritius.
- Very large UHNW structures may find the offering narrower than at global tier-1 houses.
In FY2025 group headline earnings rose 11% to R 49.2 billion; the offshore businesses contributed R 3.1 billion (6%), and the Personal & Private Banking segment R 11.4 billion. Private banking client numbers grew 8% in 1H26 (the absolute count is not disclosed). Offshore leadership was in transition in 2025–2026 (Will Thorp had led the Offshore Group since 2016; acting island heads are cited on the official page).
Q/A
Did Standard Bank sell its Jersey and Isle of Man offshore banks?
No — both operate today and publish results. The actual disposals were Standard Bank Argentina (to ICBC, completed in 2020) and 60% of Standard Bank Plc in London (2015), which was not a private bank.
What income is required for private banking in South Africa?
A minimum of R 58,000 per month for the Private Banking Account (R 490 monthly fee); the Signature tier starts at R 92,000 per month.
What is the offshore account entry threshold?
The Optimum account starts at £ 5,000 or US$ 7,000; the more accessible Seafarer account at £ 2,500 or US$ 3,500.
How are deposits protected?
In South Africa CODI covers up to R 100,000 per depositor; Jersey and the Isle of Man each cover up to £ 50,000 per person under their local schemes. Offshore entities place funds with the wider group, so standing is linked to Standard Bank Group.
Who runs the franchise?
The Personal & Private Banking segment is led by Funeka Montjane (since 2021); offshore has reported to Lungisa Fuzile since 2025. Offshore leadership was in transition in 2025–2026.
