Concept

Nedbank Private Wealth is the international private bank of South Africa's Nedbank group for mobile clients: the Isle of Man, Jersey, London and Dubai. Type: a private bank inside the group (JSE: NED); the Nedbank Private Wealth Limited entity has been incorporated in the Isle of Man since 1987. Its heritage is Fairbairn Private Bank (rebranded to Nedbank Private Wealth in 2012). The CEO is Stuart Cummins (since 2018); Andrew Corlett became chairman in September 2025. In 2022 the Channel Islands trust business was sold to Suntera Global; since July 2025 the unit sits in the group's Personal & Private Banking cluster.

History and evolution

The bank has operated in the Isle of Man since 1987; in 2009 Nedbank bought out Old Mutual's stake to become full owner; in 2008 it opened the London branch (the first offshore-island bank with a UK branch), and in 2011 the Dubai office. In 2022 the trust business (Guernsey/Jersey) was sold to Suntera Global. Fresh appointments: three new non-executive directors in December 2025, including the head of the PPB cluster and the group CFO.

Scale: the NPWL entity is the Isle of Man's second-largest bank (~21% market share, £1.27bn of assets in 2025); over 300 staff across four points; group funds under management stand at R501bn at end-2025, of which the international business holds R121bn.

Regulation

  • IOMFSA — Nedbank Private Wealth Limited (Douglas, Isle of Man);
  • JFSC — the Jersey branch (St Helier);
  • PRA / FCA — the London branch (FRN 313189);
  • Central Bank of the UAE — the Dubai representative office (onshore, not the DIFC);
  • SARB / FSCA — Nedbank Private Wealth inside Nedbank Ltd (South Africa).

Source of funds and compliance

Onboarding is documentary: passport, proof of address, source of funds. Dated episode: in December 2023 the IOMFSA imposed a £535k civil penalty for AML/CFT shortcomings around foreign PEP clients (from a May 2022 thematic inspection; the bank cooperated, settled early and remediated). At group level — a SARB fine of R35m for Nedbank Limited (2022).

Who it serves

  • international clients: officially — a typical Jersey client holds investable assets of around £500,000 or an annual income of ~£250,000; per the group's 2026 description — mobile clients, families and trusts above £1m;
  • South Africa: officially — income from R2m a year and/or R5m of investable assets;
  • South African and British expats — the historic niche, including the Dubai office for expats;
  • structures: lending to structures in the UK, Isle of Man, Jersey, BVI and Mauritius.

Services

Banking

  • multi-currency current and deposit accounts, FX, fixed-term deposits from £50,000.

Lending

Wealth management

  • discretionary management on an open architecture (sustainable strategies since 2022), advisory and execution with custody;
  • services for professional trustees (after the own-trust sale) and succession planning; in South Africa — trusts and estates via Nedbank Ltd.

Guernsey: exited in 2022 (trusts sold to Suntera); no banking presence remains.

Strengths

  • three booking points with different protection (Man, Jersey, London) under one relationship logic;
  • a strong lending practice against property and structures;
  • officially published benchmarks for international and South African clients;
  • backing of the Nedbank group with a full domestic perimeter in South Africa.

Where it does not fit

  • clients without South African/British ties — the model is niche expats and mobile families;
  • those who want in-house trusts — sold to Suntera in 2022;
  • clients sensitive to the 2023 IOMFSA penalty over PEP clients;
  • fortunes below ~£500,000 (the international benchmark).

Nedbank Private Wealth is the island bank for South African-British mobile families: three booking points, strong lending and honest benchmarks; the weak spots are its niche nature and the 2023 penalty in the public record.

Q/A

Entry and geography

What minimum capital does Nedbank Private Wealth require?

The international format officially targets ~£500,000 of investable assets or ~£250,000 of annual income (per the group's 2026 description — mobile clients and trusts above £1m). In South Africa: income from R2m a year and/or R5m of investable assets. The product floor is fixed-term deposits from £50,000.

What remains after the trust-business sale?

The Guernsey and Jersey trust companies went to Suntera Global in April 2022; the bank kept banking, lending and wealth management in the Isle of Man, Jersey and London plus the Dubai representative office. Structures are now served with professional trustee partners.

What does the deposit guarantee cover?

Isle of Man — DCS £50,000; Jersey — JDCS £50,000; London — FSCS £120,000. The Dubai office takes no deposits. Custody securities remain the client's property.

Supervisory backdrop

What was the 2023 IOMFSA penalty?

£535k (after the early-settlement discount) for AML/CFT shortcomings around foreign PEP clients: risk assessments, enhanced diligence, source-of-funds documentation, monitoring — from a May 2022 thematic inspection. The bank cooperated and remediated; these are process costs, not a risk to client assets.

Is this the same brand as Fairbairn Private Bank?

Yes: the island bank of 1987 became Fairbairn Private Bank in 2004 and was renamed Nedbank Private Wealth in 2012, after Nedbank bought out Old Mutual's stake in 2009. The Jersey entity was merged into NPWL that same year.
