Concept

QNB Private Banking is the private bank of the QNB group (Qatar National Bank, Q.P.S.C.), the largest bank in the Middle East and Africa: assets of QAR 1.39tn (~$382bn) and 2025 profit of QAR 17bn. Type: a private bank of a universal group 50% owned by the sovereign Qatar Investment Authority; listed on the Qatar Stock Exchange (QNBK). The chairman is Finance Minister Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, the group CEO is Abdulla Mubarak Al-Khalifa; the unit is overseen by Senior EVP Abdulla Hashim Al Sada. QNB Private calls itself the first private bank established in Qatar.

History and evolution

Founded in 1964 as the first Qatari-owned commercial bank. The expansion map: London and Paris (late 1980s), Geneva — QNB (Suisse) SA (a FINMA banking licence since 2009), Singapore (2008), Egypt — the NSGB purchase for ~$2.5bn (2013, now QNB Egypt), Turkey — Finansbank for €2.75bn (2016, rebranded to QNB Bank A.Ş. in October 2024 — not sold, contrary to rumours), Riyadh (2017), Hong Kong (2021), India's GIFT City (2025). Exits: Libya and Mauritania; the UAE presence runs through a 40% stake in Commercial Bank International.

Unit scale: in 2025 private-banking assets grew ~50%, with ~30% of the Qatari market; 2025 accolades as best private bank in the Middle East and Qatar from Global Finance and Euromoney.

Regulation

  • Qatar Central Bank (QCB) — QNB QPSC (Doha; a D-SIB with a 17% minimum CAR); QFMA — broker QNB Financial Services;
  • FINMA — QNB (Suisse) SA (Geneva) — the group's stated offshore private-banking hub;
  • BDDK — QNB Bank A.Ş. (Istanbul, 99.88%); CBE — QNB Egypt; SAMA — the Riyadh branch;
  • MAS — the Singapore branch (wholesale); HKMA — the Hong Kong branch; the London and Paris branches sit under host supervision.

Source of funds and compliance

The group financial-crime framework follows Wolfsberg/FATF standards: enhanced diligence for PEPs and wealthy clients, senior-management approval for high-risk relationships, source of funds and source of wealth. No public enforcement against the private-banking units was identified for 2023–2026; Qatar's 2023 FATF mutual evaluation noted progress.

Who it serves

  • Qatar: QNB Private is officially by the bank's invitation only, with no published minimum (the tiers below: QNB First from a QAR 35,000 salary or QAR 350,000 savings; First Plus from QAR 100,000 / QAR 4m);
  • Turkey: an official tiering — private banking from TRY 15m of savings;
  • international clients — booking via Geneva (QNB Suisse) and the London and Paris branches;
  • clients wanting a Shariah format: in Qatar the Islamic windows of conventional banks were closed by a 2011 QCB directive, while Shariah-compliant solutions run through Geneva (wakala, reverse murabaha) and sukuk via QNB Capital.

Services

Wealth management

  • advisory and discretionary management, brokerage and custody (GCC and global markets), structured products;
  • Shariah lines via Geneva.

Lending

  • lombard loans, real-estate lending in Switzerland, France and other countries, international mortgages;
  • concierge and UHNW lifestyle services.

Family

  • wealth and estate planning in the Geneva family-office format.

Strengths

  • the region's largest bank with a sovereign owner (QIA ~50%);
  • an offshore hub in Geneva with a FINMA licence and Shariah lines;
  • leadership in Qatar (~30% of the market) and strong home markets in Turkey and Egypt;
  • 2025 awards from Global Finance and Euromoney for the region.

Where it does not fit

  • clients seeking a published threshold: entry in Qatar is by invitation only;
  • those looking for deposit insurance in Qatar: a fund is legally authorised but not operational;
  • clients outside the region beyond Geneva/London/Paris — the map is selective;
  • portfolios centred on crypto assets.

QNB Private is the sovereign-backed leader of the Gulf with a Geneva offshore wing; for an international client the logic is simple: Geneva for booking, Doha for the invited.

Q/A

Entry and geography

What minimum capital does QNB Private require?

In Qatar it is officially by the bank's invitation only, with no published minimum. Benchmarks for the tiers below: QNB First from a QAR 35,000 salary or QAR 350,000 savings. In Turkey it is published: private banking from TRY 15m of savings. Geneva works on a relationship basis without a public threshold.

Where can an international client book an account?

The group's offshore hub is QNB (Suisse) SA in Geneva (a FINMA licence since 2009, esisuisse CHF 100,000); private banking also runs through the London and Paris branches. The Qatari format is for invited clients with a local logic.

Is there Islamic private banking?

Not in Qatar: since 2011 a QCB directive has closed the Islamic windows of conventional banks. QNB delivers Shariah-compliant solutions through Geneva (wakala, reverse murabaha, third-party products) and sukuk origination via QNB Capital.

Structure

Did QNB sell Finansbank?

No: the Turkish bank remains in the group (a 99.88% stake) and was renamed QNB Bank A.Ş. in October 2024. There was no sale — only a rebrand; the BIST listing is kept.

What does the deposit guarantee cover?

Switzerland — esisuisse CHF 100,000; Turkey — SDIF TRY 1.2m from 2026; Egypt — a CBE-affiliated guarantee fund; in Qatar a fund has been authorised by the 2012 law but is not publicly operational. Custody securities remain the client's property.
