Concept

Nordea Private Banking is the private bank of the largest Nordic group, Nordea Bank Abp (Helsinki; a significant institution under direct ECB supervision). Type: a private bank inside a universal group (Nasdaq Helsinki/Stockholm/Copenhagen: NDA). The unit sits inside Asset & Wealth Management, led since January 2025 by Martin A Persson. A key feature: Nordea's private banking is strictly Nordic. The international perimeter (Zurich, Singapore, Luxembourg) was closed in 2017–2019, and today the bank effectively does not onboard non-residents from outside the region into private banking.

History and evolution

The group was assembled through mergers in 1997–2001 (Merita, Nordbanken, Unidanmark, Christiania); in 2017 the national subsidiaries became branches of the single Finnish entity, and in 2018 the HQ moved from Stockholm to Helsinki — under the banking union. Luxembourg private banking was sold to UBS Europe (2018, ~€13bn), Russia was closed by 2022. In November 2024 it completed the purchase of Danske Bank's Norwegian retail and private-banking business (~€2bn AuM, 235,000 customers).

AWM assets reached a record €509.4bn at 30 September 2026 (+13% y/y).

Regulation

  • ECB / FIN-FSA — Nordea Bank Abp, Helsinki;
  • conduct oversight by the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish financial supervisors for the branches;
  • CSSF — Nordea Investment Funds S.A. (Luxembourg, funds only).

Source of funds and compliance

The EU standard applies: identification, beneficial owners, source of funds and source of wealth, CRS/FATCA. In July 2024 Denmark's NSK prosecutor indicted Nordea over approximately DKK26bn of suspicious 2012–2015 transactions through the Vesterport branch. The reported prosecution request was a DKK6.6bn fine; Nordea denied guilt. In its third-quarter 2026 report, published on 15 October, Nordea continued to disclose a provision for Danish AML-related matters. Separately, an August 2024 NYDFS consent order imposed a US$35m penalty over the 2008–2019 AML programme.

Who it serves

  • Denmark: officially from DKK 4m of household investable wealth;
  • Sweden: officially from SEK 5m;
  • Finland: officially above €500,000;
  • Norway: per industry estimates ~NOK 6m (unpublished); official top tiers — Nordea Black above NOK 20m;
  • larger families — family-office advisory and succession planning.

Services

Wealth management

  • discretionary and advisory management, brokerage;
  • private markets via feeder funds (Cubera Private Equity and others).

Lending

  • securities-backed lending (private-banking clients only); a Securities Finance desk for loans from ~SEK 50m serving family offices and investment companies.

Wealth planning

  • inheritance and wealth structuring, pension planning;
  • the hybrid digital Private Banking Direct format (Denmark).

Entities and booking centres

One legal entity plus branches — no separate country banks.

Luxembourg is a fund-management entity only; Zurich and Singapore were closed before 2019.

Strengths

  • the largest Nordic bank with record divisional assets (€509bn);
  • published thresholds in every home country;
  • a strong digital practice (the 2026 PWM Wealth Tech award for digital client experience in Europe);
  • a single legal entity: one agreement across four Nordic markets.

Where it does not fit

  • non-residents outside the Nordics — service is explicitly restricted and no loans are granted to non-residents;
  • those needing Swiss/Luxembourg booking — sold to UBS and closed;
  • clients sensitive to the supervisory backdrop: NSK indicted the bank in the Danish AML case in July 2024;
  • fortunes below the thresholds (DKK 4m / SEK 5m / €500k).

Nordea Private Banking is the Nordic domestic model with honest thresholds and a strong digital arm; the international perimeter is closed; NSK indicted the bank in the Danish AML case in July 2024.

Q/A

Entry and geography

What minimum capital does Nordea Private Banking require?

Officially: Denmark from DKK 4m, Sweden from SEK 5m, Finland above €500,000. Norway publishes no threshold (industry estimates ~NOK 6m); the top tiers include Nordea Black above NOK 20m.

Does Nordea open accounts for non-residents?

For private banking, effectively no: the bank states it works as a Nordic bank for customers in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway; non-residents outside the region face a limited offering, and non-EU/EEA residents may have accounts terminated. The international points (Zurich, Singapore, Luxembourg) were closed or sold back in 2017–2019.

What does the deposit guarantee cover?

Primary cover is the Finnish Deposit Guarantee Fund up to €100,000 per depositor for all Nordea Bank Abp branches; the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish schemes join as supplements (Norway's level is NOK 2m). Custody securities remain the client's property.

The Danish case

What is Nordea accused of in Denmark?

In July 2024 NSK indicted Nordea over approximately DKK26bn of suspicious 2012–2015 transactions through the Vesterport International Branch, which has since closed. The reported prosecution request was a DKK6.6bn fine; the bank denied guilt. NSK's 2024 annual report scheduled hearings from May 2025 to June 2026. Nordea's third-quarter 2026 report, published on 15 October, continued to disclose a provision for Danish AML-related matters; the requested fine is distinct from a court award.

Are client assets at risk?

No: the case concerns historic AML breaches and a fine to the bank, not the safety of assets. The potential financial effect is measured against the bank's provision and capital; deposit protection and custody segregation operate as usual.
