Concept
Northern Trust is a Chicago group with two pillars: institutional asset servicing and private Wealth Management. Type: a trust bank for wealthy families and family offices; the operating core is The Northern Trust Company, an Illinois state-chartered bank dating to 1889, a Federal Reserve member with FDIC-insured deposits (certificate #913) — not an OCC national bank, contrary to a common assumption. The holding company Northern Trust Corporation (Delaware, formed 1971) is listed on Nasdaq (NTRS) and sits in the S&P 500. Chairman and CEO is Michael O'Grady; Wealth Management has been led since October 2024 by Jason Tyler.
History and evolution
The bank was founded in Chicago on 12 August 1889 by Byron Laflin Smith: US$1 million of capital, 40% of it from Smith, with Marshall Field and Philip D. Armour among the original stockholders. The Smith family ran the bank for roughly 90 years. It grew through the Great Depression; it took US$1.5bn of TARP in 2008 and repaid it in June 2009.
Events of 2024–2026: in July 2025 Senator Warren, citing reports of a possible BNY acquisition, called such a combination "presumptively illegal"; in July 2026 the bank sold its guardianship business (~US$1.2bn AuM) to Wintrust; in October 2026 UBS agreed to transfer the ex-Credit Suisse Swiss and Luxembourg fund-administration business to the bank (closing expected in Q2 2027).
Scale: Wealth Management assets under management were US$507.2bn at end-2025 and US$533.9bn at 30 June 2026; the group became the first in the industry to cross US$20 trillion of assets under custody and administration. The average wealth loan book was US$35.8bn in Q2 2026. The unit has been named "Best Private Bank in the U.S." by PWM/The Banker 14 times (latest 2025); per the bank, its clients include over 20% of America's wealthiest families and around 30% of the Forbes 400 in the family-office segment.
Regulation
- Federal Reserve / Illinois DFPR / FDIC — The Northern Trust Company (US); the brokerage line is Northern Trust Securities, Inc. (SEC, FINRA/SIPC);
- PRA / FCA — the London branch (FRN 122020, professional clients only);
- GFSC — three licensed Guernsey entities: the bank, the trustee and the fund-administration company;
- ECB / CSSF — Northern Trust Global Services SE (Luxembourg), including the ADGM (Abu Dhabi) and Basel branches;
- MAS — the Singapore branch (wholesale bank);
- SFC — The Northern Trust Company of Hong Kong (Type 1/2/4/9 licences, professional investors only, holds no client assets).
Source of funds and compliance
The franchise is US-centric: accounts are opened under BSA/USA PATRIOT Act customer-identification rules. Non-US clients are served via London, Guernsey, Singapore and Abu Dhabi, typically through the Global Family & Private Investment Offices group. The bank publishes no source-of-funds documentation standards — the AML/KYC requirements of each centre apply; in London onboarding is restricted to professional clients and eligible counterparties.
Who it serves
- Family offices and UHNW families: the Global Family Office group officially targets clients with assets typically exceeding US$200 million; it reports 500+ relationships with an average client size around US$1bn;
- HNW private clients: no official minimum is published; industry estimates cite US$5–10m of investable assets, with eligibility at the bank's discretion;
- US families across 19 states and Washington, D.C.: bank accounts, trusts, mortgages;
- international families with a US or multi-jurisdiction footprint — via GFO.
Services
Trusts and estates — the core of the house
- trust administration, estate settlement, asset guardianship;
- family-business consulting and family financial education;
- philanthropic services.

Entities and booking centres
Wealth Management spans 19 US states plus Washington, D.C.; per the 2025 annual report, the only international wealth offices are London, Guernsey, Singapore and Abu Dhabi.

Other international locations (Luxembourg, Ireland, the Netherlands, the Nordics, Japan, Australia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, China) serve the institutional business rather than private clients.
Strengths
- a trust-and-estate core: few houses work this deeply with trusts, estates and family offices;
- the group's custody scale (US$20tn) and a 37.4% pre-tax margin in the wealth unit;
- a real credit book for wealthy clients, not just portfolio management;
- a declared commitment to independence after the 2025 BNY and Goldman approaches.
Where it does not fit
- non-US clients without a family office: the international points are built for GFO and professional clients;
- anyone seeking Swiss wealth booking — the Swiss presence is fund servicing only;
- retail and affluent clients: the bar is high and there is no mass-market format;
- portfolios centred on crypto assets — no dedicated private-client offering.
Northern Trust is an American trust machine with a narrow international perimeter: for a family office above US$200 million it is one of the strongest options on the market; for a private client below that scale the house will most likely remain out of reach.
Q/A
Thresholds and geography
What minimum capital does Northern Trust require?
A public benchmark exists only for the Global Family Office group — clients with assets typically above US$200 million. For core private banking no minimum is published; industry estimates cite US$5–10 million of investable assets, with the final decision resting with the bank.
Can a family from Europe or Asia open an account outside the US?
Yes, but the points are few: London (professional clients only), Guernsey, Singapore and Abu Dhabi. Such relationships typically run through the Global Family Office group, which assembles multi-jurisdiction booking, custody and trusts into one structure.
What does deposit insurance cover?
In the US — FDIC up to US$250,000 per depositor per ownership category. In Guernsey — £50,000 under the local scheme, with companies and most trustee accounts excluded; Singapore and Abu Dhabi carry no insurance. Custody securities are segregated and stay out of the bankruptcy estate.
Independence and strategy
BNY wanted to buy Northern Trust — will the bank be sold?
In June 2025 BNY made an unsolicited merger approach; Northern Trust publicly stated its commitment to independence, and the CEO confirmed in July 2025 that no sale talks took place. Senator Warren called a potential deal "presumptively illegal". No transaction happened.
Why is the bank selling guardianship while buying UBS fund administration?
It is a consistent reprioritisation: exiting low-margin guardianship (~US$1.2bn AuM, sold to Wintrust in July 2026) while strengthening the institutional core with the ex-Credit Suisse fund-administration transfer from UBS (October 2026). Wealth Management private clients are not directly affected.
