Concept

Nomura Wealth Management is the affluent-to-UHNW division of Japan's largest investment group. There is no standalone "private bank" in the Swiss sense: the model is built around an investment house — brokerage, discretionary management and deal access, complemented by the trust bank Nomura Trust & Banking (deposits, trusts, inheritance support).

On 1 April 2024 the group's Retail Division was renamed Wealth Management, and from 1 April 2025 a Banking Division was created, combining Nomura Trust & Banking and Nomura Bank Luxembourg. The international arm is International Wealth Management (IWM): booking in Singapore (merchant bank, the main hub), Hong Kong and Dubai (a DIFC branch opened in late 2025). IWM assets under management are about USD 38 billion (December 2025), with a stated goal of becoming a top-15 private wealth manager in Asia ex-Japan. Client assets of the Wealth Management Division in Japan stood at JPY 183.7 trillion (June 2026).

History and evolution

  • 1925 — Nomura Securities is spun off from Osaka Nomura Bank, starting in bond trading.
  • Post-war decades — Nomura becomes Japan's dominant retail broker with a nationwide network.
  • 2001 — Nomura Holdings holding structure is created.
  • 2008 — acquisition of Lehman Brothers' Asian and European operations sharply expands international presence.
  • 01.04.2024 — Retail Division renamed Wealth Management Division.
  • April 2025 — agreement to acquire Macquarie's US and European asset management business for USD 1.8 billion.
  • 01.04.2025 — Banking Division created (Nomura Trust & Banking + Nomura Bank Luxembourg).
  • Late 2025 — DIFC (Dubai) branch opened; 25.12.2025 — the group's centenary.

Regulation

The group's core is supervised by Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA): Nomura Securities as a Type I broker-dealer, Nomura Trust & Banking as a trust bank. International venues: MAS (Singapore, merchant bank status), SFC (Hong Kong), DFSA (Dubai DIFC), CSSF (Luxembourg).

A compliance episode worth noting: on 31 October 2024 the FSA fined Nomura Securities JPY 21.76 million for manipulation of Japanese government bond futures (trades from 2021); primary dealer status for JGBs was suspended for one month, and Osaka Exchange and JSDA imposed additional fines of JPY 60 million and JPY 30 million. The group announced a package of measures to strengthen controls.

Source of wealth

The core clientele is Japan's business owners and senior executives: a large share of fortunes comes from selling companies, dividends and inheritance in an ageing society. Nomura runs a dedicated business-owner practice (business succession): M&A, IPO preparation, handing the company to the next generation. Like other banks, Nomura asks for documents evidencing source of funds: business sale contracts, brokerage statements, inheritance papers.

Who it serves

  • Wealthy Japanese residents — from mass-affluent to UHNW; a network of 103 branches.
  • Business owners: deal support, company succession, personal wealth management after an exit.
  • International clients in Asia and the Middle East via IWM (Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai) — predominantly UHNW relationships.

Services

  • Brokerage: equities, bonds, structured products, participation in primary offerings.
  • Discretionary management and funds, including global strategies (line-up expanded via the Macquarie AM acquisition).
  • Trust services of Nomura Trust & Banking: testamentary trusts, inheritance support, real estate transactions.
  • Investment banking for business owners: M&A, listings, corporate finance.
  • Tax-efficient wrappers for Japanese residents (NISA and others).
  • International booking and portfolio services via IWM.

Classic lombard lending is not part of the public line-up — ask your banker about securities-backed financing terms.

Strengths

  • Japan's largest investment house with a century of history and 103 branches.
  • Integration of private wealth and investment banking: deal access, primary market, research.
  • Own trust bank: inheritance and real estate without external providers.
  • Growing international booking: Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai; targeting top-15 in Asia ex-Japan.
  • The Macquarie AM acquisition (USD 1.8 billion) expands the fund line-up.

Where it falls short

  • Not a classic private bank: no public thresholds, no "account + card" packages, no transparent fee grid.
  • Non-residents of Japan are served de facto via IWM with high relationship-size expectations.
  • European presence for private clients is narrow (Luxembourg); no private banking in the US.
  • Lombard and deposit products are not published — terms only on request.
  • Reputational overhang from the 2024 JGB futures case — check current compliance remediation.

Nomura is optimal for wealthy Japanese residents and business owners who want one provider "from brokerage to trust", and for Asian UHNW clients seeking an alternative to Swiss private bankers with strong access to the Japanese market.

Q/A

Does Nomura have a minimum entry threshold?

There is no official threshold. Press estimates put premium servicing in Japan from roughly JPY 100 million in financial assets; international IWM targets relationships from ~USD 20 million.

Where are international assets booked?

The main hub is Singapore (merchant bank, MAS), followed by Hong Kong (SFC) and Dubai (DIFC, since late 2025). The European venue is Nomura Bank Luxembourg. On the logic of choosing a centre, see the article on booking centres.

How are deposits and securities protected?

Deposits with Nomura Trust & Banking carry DIC insurance up to JPY 10 million per depositor. Securities are segregated from the broker's assets; additional protection comes from the Japan Investor Protection Fund, up to JPY 10 million.

What was the 2024 fine about?

The FSA fined Nomura Securities JPY 21.76 million (31.10.2024) for manipulating JGB futures in 2021; primary dealer status was suspended for one month, and Osaka Exchange and JSDA added fines of JPY 60 million and JPY 30 million. The group announced stronger controls.

Is Nomura a private bank?

No: there is no standalone private bank. The model is an investment house with a Wealth Management division, a trust bank and the international IWM arm.
