Concept

BMO Private Wealth is the private banking and wealth platform of Bank of Montreal, Canada's oldest bank. The brand was formed in 2019 by merging BMO Private Banking and BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc., combining private banking, full-service brokerage, discretionary portfolio management, trust and estate services, and a family office. In the United States the group operates as BMO Private Bank (a brand of BMO Bank N.A.) and BMO Wealth Management U.S. — SEC-registered investment advisers including Stoker Ostler Wealth Advisors and BMO Family Office LLC.

BMO Wealth Management is one of the bank's three operating groups, spanning BMO North American Private Wealth, BMO InvestorLine, BMO Global Asset Management, and BMO Insurance. Officially, as of 31 October 2025, group total assets were C$1,476.8 bn; FY2025 net income was C$8,725 m; the Wealth Management segment (new perimeter) reported C$390.3 bn of AUM and C$282.3 bn of AUA (+20 % / +15 % YoY). BMO is Canada's #3 bank by assets.

Strengths

  • Canada's oldest bank (1817), #3 by assets; scale of C$1,476.8 bn.
  • Full stack under one roof: banking, brokerage, DPM, trust, family office.
  • A unique Canada–US cross-border platform built through Harris, M&I, and Bank of the West.
  • Separate CDIC member for trust deposits (BMO Trust Company).
  • Awards (the bank's own claims): World Finance "Best Private Bank in Canada" 2011–2025; Euromoney "Canada's Best Private Bank for UHNW" 2025.

Where it falls short

  • No Asian booking: Hong Kong and Singapore private banking was sold to J. Safra Sarasin in 2021.
  • No published entry thresholds; reported minimums (~C$1 m) put the service out of reach for newer investors — BMO InvestorLine fits them better.
  • The pending sale of 138 US branches (First-Citizens, expected mid-2026) may thin the physical network in parts of the US.
  • North America focus: limited relevance for clients outside Canada and the US.

BMO Private Wealth combines a two-century banking heritage with a full-service North American wealth platform; confirm current thresholds and availability in your jurisdiction before onboarding.
