Concept

KBC Private Banking is the private bank of Belgium's KBC group, anchored in its home markets: Belgium, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Bulgaria. Type: a private bank inside a universal group listed on Euronext Brussels (KBC); the group calls itself Belgium's only major privately owned bank. The top tier is KBC Wealth Management for fortunes from €5m. Luxembourg's KBL was sold in 2011–2012 (now Quintet); the group no longer has an international booking centre.

History and evolution

KBC was formed in 1998 by merging Kredietbank, CERA Bank and insurer ABB. After the 2008–2009 state aid, the European Commission required divestments: in 2012 KBL epb left for €1.05bn (today's Quintet Private Bank). Then came the Ireland exit (2023–2024) and home-market reinforcement: UBB in Bulgaria, the merger with Raiffeisenbank Bulgaria, and the completed purchase of Slovakia's 365.bank for €761m in January 2026. Awards: "Best Private Bank in Belgium" from PWM/The Banker (7th time) and Euromoney (10th time, 2025).

The unit's assets stand at €82.8bn at end-2024, within the group's €300bn under management at end-2025; the Belgian private-banking network doubled with 15 new offices amid a ~50% surge in UHNW clients.

Regulation

  • ECB / NBB — KBC Bank NV (Brussels); FSMA — conduct oversight;
  • Czech National Bank — ČSOB (Prague);
  • MNB — K&H Bank (Budapest); BNB — United Bulgarian Bank (Sofia); Slovakia's ČSOB — local supervision.

Source of funds and compliance

The EU standard applies: identification, beneficial owners, source of funds and source of wealth, CRS/FATCA. Per the 2024 prospectus, the bank adjusted its AML policy after an NBB inspection on governance and transaction monitoring — an inspection follow-up, not a fine; no public sanction specific to the private-banking unit was identified.

Who it serves

  • Belgium: private banking from €500k invested or €1m total assets (per bank statements to the press); Wealth Management officially from €5m;
  • Czech Republic: officially from CZK 10m of total assets; the ČSOB Wealth Office family-office tier from CZK 100m;
  • Hungary: an official entry benchmark of HUF 100m;
  • entrepreneurs and families in the home markets: business succession, estate planning, Next Gen.

  • discretionary and advisory management via KBC Asset Management;
  • private markets: in-house deals plus access to tier-1 global PE funds for Wealth Management clients.

Luxembourg: only the KBC IFIMA financing vehicle — no booking since the KBL sale.

Strengths

  • home-market depth in Belgium: a 27% investment-fund market share and a doubled office network;
  • published thresholds by country — rare transparency;
  • a full in-group stack: bank, asset manager, broker, insurer;
  • PWM and Euromoney awards for Belgium.

Where it does not fit

  • non-residents outside the five home markets: no international booking centre since the KBL sale;
  • clients needing Swiss or Asian booking;
  • fortunes below €500k in Belgium;
  • those seeking a global network — the model is deliberately domestic.

KBC Private Banking is a domestic Belgian-Central-European house with honest thresholds and a strong UHNW tier from €5m; for an international client without regional ties this is not the right perimeter.

Q/A

Entry and geography

What minimum capital does KBC Private Banking require?

In Belgium — from €500k invested or €1m of total assets (per bank statements to the press); the Wealth Management tier is officially from €5m. In the Czech Republic officially from CZK 10m; in Hungary the benchmark is HUF 100m.

Does KBC offer international booking for non-residents?

No: Luxembourg's KBL was sold in 2012 and became Quintet; the group's private banking works across five home markets — Belgium, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Bulgaria. A non-resident without regional ties will not fit this perimeter.

What does the deposit guarantee cover?

Belgium — the guarantee fund €100,000; the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Bulgaria — national schemes at the €100,000 equivalent. Custody securities remain the client's property.

History

Why did KBC sell KBL?

The 2011–2012 sale (€1.05bn) was mandatory under the European Commission's plan after state aid: KBC thus exited Luxembourg private banking and concentrated on home markets. The former KBL is today's Quintet Private Bank.

What did the 365.bank acquisition bring?

The deal completed in January 2026 (€761m) strengthened Slovakia: 365.bank was merged into Slovakia's ČSOB in November 2026. It is a retail-digital reinforcement of a home market, not an international private-banking expansion.
