Concept

Bangkok Bank Private Bank is the flagship private-banking proposition of Thailand's largest bank. Qualifying status requires qualifying AUM (deposits plus qualifying investments) averaging at least THB 50m over the past 6 months. The official tier ladder: Bualuang Exclusive (affluent, from THB 3m, invitation-only membership renewed annually) → Bangkok Bank Visa Infinite (from THB 10m average) → Bangkok Bank Private Bank (from THB 50m) → PINNACLE (UHNW, invitation-only, from THB 100m held for 6+ consecutive months; launched 29 November 2022 with the first metal card from a Thai bank). Investment capabilities are built around a Chief Investment Office "powered by Banque Pictet" — a strategic alliance announced on 28 October 2021.

History and evolution

  • 1944 — founded by Chin Sophonpanich.
  • 1954 — first overseas branch opens in Hong Kong.
  • 1967 — royal warrant granted (garuda emblem).
  • 1997 — survived the Asian financial crisis without nationalisation.
  • 2005 — the Bualuang Exclusive HNW programme was already operating.
  • 2019–2020 — acquired PT Bank Permata Tbk (Indonesia) from Standard Chartered and Astra for ~US$ 2.3bn.
  • 28 October 2021 — strategic wealth-management alliance with Banque Pictet announced.
  • January 2022 — Claude Haberer, former Chairman of Pictet Wealth Management Asia, joined as advisor to the President.
  • 29 November 2022 — PINNACLE launched for UHNW clients.
  • 2024 — the bank marked its 80th anniversary.

Regulation

Bangkok Bank PCL is a universal bank supervised by the Bank of Thailand, with securities activities overseen by the SEC of Thailand. The group ended 2025 with total assets of THB 4.61tn (Thailand's largest bank by total assets, around sixth in ASEAN), FY2025 net profit of THB 46bn (+1.8%), a CET1 ratio of 17.2% and roughly 17 million retail accounts. No public enforcement action against Bangkok Bank PCL was identified in the sources reviewed (BOT, SEC Thailand, HKMA, MAS; English- and Thai-language searches) — an observation about reviewed sources, not a certified "clean record". Group President Chartsiri Sophonpanich, grandson of the founder, has held the role since 1994; the non-executive Chairman is Phornthep Phornprapha (since February 2023). Private banking is led by Cholathee Pornrojnangkool, Head of Investment Solution, Wealth and Private Bank.

Source of wealth

The core clientele is Sino-Thai business families, industrial and trading fortunes, property developers and professionals, alongside entrepreneurs riding Mekong-region and ASEAN expansion. Documentation of source of funds follows Bank of Thailand standards.

Who it serves

Thai and regional HNW and UHNW clients: family-business owners, industrial and trading dynasties, developers, senior executives and professionals, plus affluent Mekong-region families served through the branch network.

Services

  • Chief Investment Office advisory (powered by Banque Pictet) and portfolio strategy;
  • Pictet-advised products: BCAP Global Multi Asset funds and a BCAP private fund investing in a Pictet private-equity fund-of-funds;
  • wealth creation and wealth protection advisory;
  • family wealth solutions advisory;
  • concierge (PINNACLE personal assistant);
  • bancassurance;
  • home and credit lending.

No personal trust product is marketed and no lombard-style credit is documented in published materials — this reflects an absence of published offerings, not a confirmed refusal.

Entities

Bangkok Bank operates 32 international branches across 15 economies — the largest overseas network of any Thai bank (Hong Kong since 1954, its first overseas branch; also Singapore, London, New York, Tokyo and more). None of these units is an offshore private-banking booking centre: offshore wealth capability is delivered via the Pictet alliance.

Strengths

  • Thailand's largest bank by total assets with a conservative capital base (CET1 17.2%).
  • Pictet alliance: expertise transfer, DPM know-how, product development and a Family Solutions workstream.
  • A transparent official threshold ladder up to the UHNW PINNACLE tier.
  • The widest international network of any Thai bank.
  • Stable family leadership: the President has been in role since 1994.

Where it falls short

  • PB AUM and client numbers are not disclosed: Bangkok Bank is absent from Asian Private Banker's Thailand AUM league tables — the only major Thai bank not participating — so the PB franchise cannot be benchmarked on public data.
  • No proprietary offshore PB booking (Hong Kong and Singapore are ordinary branches): offshore wealth servicing is available only via Pictet.
  • No published personal-trust or lombard-credit offerings.
  • Deposit protection is capped at THB 1m and covers baht deposits only.

Bangkok Bank Private Bank is the home private bank of Thailand's largest banking group with a gateway to global investing via Pictet: a strong onshore base, clear thresholds and family stewardship — set against minimal public disclosure of the PB segment itself.

Q/A

Qualifying AUM (deposits plus qualifying investments) averaging at least THB 50m over the past 6 months. Lower tiers are Bualuang Exclusive from THB 3m and Visa Infinite from THB 10m.

What is PINNACLE?

An invitation-only UHNW tier: assets of at least THB 100m held for 6+ consecutive months. Launched on 29 November 2022, it introduced the first metal card from a Thai bank.

How is Bangkok Bank linked to Pictet?

Through a strategic wealth-management alliance announced on 28 October 2021: expertise transfer, discretionary portfolio management know-how, product development and a Family Solutions workstream; the bank's CIO is branded "powered by Banque Pictet".

Are deposits insured?

Yes — baht deposits up to THB 1,000,000 per depositor per financial institution by the Thailand Deposit Protection Agency, in force since 11 August 2021. FX deposits, funds and debentures are not covered.

Does the bank disclose private-banking AUM?

No. PB AUM and client counts are not publicly disclosed, and Bangkok Bank is the only major Thai bank absent from Asian Private Banker's Thailand AUM league tables.
