## Concept

**Quintet Private Bank** is a Luxembourg private bank operating across Europe under a set of local brands: Quintet in Luxembourg, Puilaetco in Belgium, InsingerGilissen in the Netherlands, Merck Finck in Germany, Brown Shipley in the UK and Quintet Danmark. **Type**: a private bank built on a single Luxembourg legal entity, [Quintet Private Bank (Europe) S.A.](https://www.quintet.com/en-gb/about-quintet/history) (founded 1949 as Kredietbank Luxembourg); 99.9% owned by Precision Capital, a holding representing private interests of members of Qatar's ruling family. A significant institution supervised by the ECB (SSM) and the CSSF. The Group CEO since 13 April 2026 is [Dr Thomas Heinzl](https://www.quintet.com/en-gb/media/quintet-appoints-dr-thomas-heinzl-as-group-ceo) (formerly CFO of Vontobel).

## History and evolution

The bank grew inside KBC: Brown Shipley was acquired in 1992, Merck Finck in 1999, Puilaetco in 2004. In 2011–2012 KBC [sold KBL epb to Precision Capital for €1.05bn](https://www.kbc.com/content/dam/kbccom/doc/newsroom/pressreleases/2011/COM_RVG_pdf_persbericht_KBL_okt_2011_EN.pdf) under a European Commission state-aid requirement; the group was rebranded Quintet in January 2020. The 2020–2026 restructuring merged the European subsidiaries into one Luxembourg entity, exited Spain (book sold to Singular Bank) and Switzerland (Bank am Bellevue, clients referred to PKB) in 2021–2022; in 2025 Brown Shipley sold its Southern-African expat book to Investec Bank Switzerland. The owner has injected over €350m into the bank since 2012.

Client assets stood at [€105.1bn at end-2025](https://www.quintet.com/en-gb/media/quintet-reports-solid-2025-results-with-growing-client-assets-and-strong-capital-position), with net profit of €66.3m (a fourth consecutive profitable year after the 2019–2022 losses); CET1 is 22.5% with around 1,650 staff.

> 🍓 All European brands are branches of the single Luxembourg entity, so deposits are covered by the [FGDL: €100,000 per depositor in aggregate across all Quintet branches](https://www.fgdl.lu/en/deposit-guarantee/) — not per brand. Brown Shipley is a separate UK bank: FSCS, with the limit at £120,000 from 1 December 2025.

## Regulation

- **ECB / CSSF** — Quintet Private Bank (Europe) S.A. and all its EU branches;
- **NBB / FSMA** — conduct oversight of Puilaetco in Belgium; **AFM / DNB** — of InsingerGilissen in the Netherlands; **BaFin / Bundesbank** — of Merck Finck in Germany; **Finanstilsynet** — of Quintet Danmark;
- **PRA / FCA** — Brown Shipley & Co Limited (separate licence).
## Source of funds and compliance

The EU standard applies: identification, beneficial owners, [source of funds and source of wealth](https://wiki.private.law/source-of-funds), enhanced PEP diligence. The 2024 annual report notes a material claim received after year-end with no provision recorded — details undisclosed. No public regulator fines were identified for 2023–2026.

> 💡 Prepare the source-of-wealth file in advance: sale of a business, dividends, inheritance. The review mechanics are covered in the guide on [documenting source of funds](https://wiki.private.law/source-of-funds).

## Who it serves

- **HNW clients**: the only officially published threshold is Brown Shipley's — [from £1m of investable assets](https://brownshipley.com/en-gb/news-and-insights/why-wealth-planning-is-key-in-a-high-net-worth-divorce); press cites ~€1m for InsingerGilissen and ~€0.5–1m for Puilaetco (unofficial);
- residents of the group's six home markets;
- **families and family offices** — succession planning per brand;
- institutional clients — the dedicated B2B platform Quintet Financial Services since June 2026, including planned digital-asset custody.
## Services

### Wealth management

- discretionary and advisory management on an open architecture; multi-manager UCITS funds built with BlackRock;
- **private markets** via the BlackRock partnership (expanded 2025) and Moonfare.
### Lending

- [lombard loans](https://wiki.private.law/lombard-lending), mortgages and overdrafts; a loan book of ~€5bn.
### Investment products

- structured products via the group's Global Structured Solutions desk in Luxembourg.
### Wealth planning

- inheritance and succession planning per brand; services for family offices, foundations and external asset managers.
## Entities and booking centres

| Jurisdiction | Legal entity / brand | Format and supervisor | Role for the client |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Luxembourg | Quintet Private Bank (Europe) S.A. | single entity, ECB/CSSF | international booking centre and HQ |
| Belgium | Puilaetco (branch) | ECB/CSSF + NBB/FSMA | domestic market |
| Netherlands | InsingerGilissen (branch) | ECB/CSSF + AFM/DNB | domestic market |
| Germany | Merck Finck (branch) | ECB/CSSF + BaFin | domestic market |
| UK | Brown Shipley & Co Limited | subsidiary, PRA/FCA | domestic market, entry from £1m |
| Denmark | Quintet Danmark (branch) | ECB/CSSF + Finanstilsynet (since 2020) | Nordic domestic market |

Exits: Spain (2021, book sold to Singular Bank), Switzerland (2021–2022, Bank am Bellevue → clients to PKB), Brown Shipley's Southern-African expat book (2025, sold to Investec Bank Switzerland).

## Strengths

- one legal entity for continental Europe: one agreement, several markets, simple consolidation;
- strong local brands with century-long histories (Merck Finck since 1868, InsingerGilissen since 1881);
- high capitalisation: CET1 of 22.5%;
- private-markets access via BlackRock and Moonfare;
- the dedicated Quintet Financial Services B2B platform for institutional clients.
## Where it does not fit

- clients outside the six home markets and Luxembourg: international booking is concentrated in Luxembourg;
- those needing Switzerland or Asia — the exits have happened;
- fortunes below ~€0.5–1m (by brand, unofficial);
- clients sensitive to leadership turnover: four group CEOs in seven years.
Quintet is a European house with one Luxembourg entity and five local brands: the strengths are a simple structure and private-markets access, the weaknesses are the 2019–2022 loss history and CEO churn — though the last four years have been profitable.

## Q/A

### Structure and entry

### What minimum capital does Quintet require?

Only Brown Shipley publishes a threshold — from £1m of investable assets. Press cites ~€1m for InsingerGilissen and ~€0.5–1m for Puilaetco; the Luxembourg entity publishes no minimum. Admission is individual.

### Is each brand a separate bank?

No: Puilaetco, InsingerGilissen, Merck Finck and Quintet Danmark are branches of the single Luxembourg entity Quintet Private Bank (Europe) S.A., supervised by the ECB/CSSF. Only the UK's Brown Shipley holds a separate licence. The practical consequence is FGDL cover of €100,000 in aggregate across all branches.

### What does the deposit guarantee cover?

FGDL — €100,000 per depositor in aggregate across all branches (single licence), payout within 7 working days; temporary high balances up to €2.5m. Brown Shipley — FSCS £120,000 since December 2025. Custody securities remain the client's property.

### Owner and history

### Who owns Quintet?

99.9% is held by Precision Capital, a Luxembourg holding representing private interests of members of Qatar's ruling family; it bought the bank from KBC in 2012 for €1.05bn under a European Commission requirement. The owner has injected over €350m since 2012.

### Why did the bank exit Switzerland and Spain?

Both exits (2021–2022) were part of the restructuring after the loss-making years: the Swiss entity Bank am Bellevue was wound down with clients referred to PKB, and the Spanish book was sold to Singular Bank. The focus narrowed to six home markets plus Luxembourg as the international hub.
