## Concept

HBL has no standalone "Private Banking" brand: affluent and HNW clients are served under HBL Prestige, the top of the ladder Mass → Preferred → Premium (mid-tier HNW, launched 2025) → Prestige. It is a lounge-based priority-banking proposition inside Retail Banking (Head of Retail Banking: Muhammad Aalishaan Zaidi), with dedicated portfolio managers, a Prestige lounge network and priority access to the group's investment products.

HBL is Pakistan's largest private-sector bank by franchise: total assets Rs 7.7 trillion (+27% in FY2025), deposits Rs 5.5tn (12.65% market share), around 40m customers, 1,740 branches. Group President & CEO: Muhammad Nassir Salim (since March 2024); Chairman: Sultan Ali Allana (since February 2004). The controlling shareholder is the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED, Geneva) with 56.58% (Dec 2025); the remainder floats on the PSX.

## History and evolution

- **1941** — founded in Bombay by the Habib family, the subcontinent's first Muslim-owned bank.
- **1947** — headquarters moved to Karachi at Partition.
- **1972** — Habib Bank Plaza headquarters opened.
- **1 January 1974** — nationalised.
- **29 December 2003** — privatised: AKFED granted 51% for PKR 22.409bn.
- **February 2004** — management control passed to AKFED.
- **2013** — Citibank Pakistan consumer business acquired.
- **2015** — Barclays Pakistan absorbed.
- **April 2015** — the government divested its remaining 41.5% (~US$ 1.02bn).
- **2016–2021** — China entry; the Beijing branch (2021) is the first and only one for a Pakistani bank.
- **March 2024** — Muhammad Nassir Salim became CEO, succeeding Muhammad Aurangzeb, who left to become Federal Finance Minister.
- **2025** — Premium segment launched.
- **2026** — first phase of the Temenos core-banking go-live.
> 🍓 Deposit protection: contrary to a common assumption, Pakistan does have a scheme. The Deposit Protection Corporation (an SBP subsidiary) has operated since 1 June 2018; since 1 October 2024 cover is PKR 1,000,000 per depositor per bank. It covers current, savings, term and FCY deposits, including Roshan Digital Accounts; overseas branches of Pakistani banks are excluded; about 95% of depositors are fully protected. HBL Bank UK deposits are FSCS-protected up to £85,000.

## Regulation

The principal entity, Habib Bank Limited, is regulated by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and listed on the PSX; HBL Asset Management is supervised by the SECP; HBL Bank UK Limited by the PRA and FCA. Compliance history: on 7 September 2017 the NYDFS imposed a US$ 225m civil penalty for BSA/AML and OFAC failures in 2007–2017 — the largest penalty on a Pakistani bank; the New York licence was surrendered. In 2022 the SDNY allowed secondary-liability Anti-Terrorism Act claims to proceed (primary liability was dismissed; HBL calls the claims meritless), according to published reports. SBP enforcement: Q1-2024 Rs 143.376m (AML/CFT, CDD/KYC, FX); CY2025 cumulative around Rs 329m, according to reports based on SBP enforcement summaries.

## Source of wealth

Typical origins of client wealth: business families, traders and industrialists, professionals, and the overseas Pakistani diaspora (the Roshan Digital Account funnel). On verifying [source of funds](https://wiki.private.law/source-of-funds), see the dedicated wiki article.

> 💡 Prestige entry thresholds (official key fact statement): a quarterly average of PKR 5m in a current account or PKR 15m in savings; alternatives — mutual funds of PKR 15m plus a PKR 2m current account; a single premium of PKR 20m; a PKR 50m mortgage; PIBs/T-Bills of PKR 20m plus PKR 2m; or a funded Roshan Digital Account with USD 50,000 equivalent. UK Prestige (HBL Bank UK): £200,000 deposits/AUA.

## Who it serves

Business-owning families, industrialists and traders, senior professionals, and non-resident Pakistanis. The mid-tier Premium segment: 133,000 clients and Rs 386bn in deposits (Dec 2025). Prestige-specific AUM and client counts are not disclosed.

## Services

Dedicated executive portfolio managers and RMs; fee waivers; a World Elite Mastercard debit card; digital lockers; the Prestige app and phone banking; a lounge network — 56 lounges in 19 cities in Dec 2025, growing to 60 in 22 cities by Aug 2026, including Dubai (Jumeirah) and London. Investments: HBL Asset Management funds (~PKR 320bn AUM in Dec 2024, the country's #4 AMC), PIBs and T-Bills, bancassurance (Jubilee Life), term deposits. For non-residents, the Roshan Digital Account suite: fully remote onboarding, PKR/USD accounts, full repatriation, Naya Pakistan Certificates and PSX equities. No formal DPM, estate-planning or family-office offer is publicly advertised.

## Entities

| Jurisdiction | Legal entity | Form and supervision | Role |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Pakistan | Habib Bank Limited | Commercial bank; SBP; PSX-listed | Core platform; Prestige lounge network |
| Pakistan | HBL Asset Management Ltd | Asset manager; SECP | Mutual funds (~PKR 320bn AUM) |
| Pakistan | HBL Microfinance Bank | Microfinance bank; 90.83% owned | Mass segment, financial inclusion |
| United Kingdom | HBL Bank UK Limited | Bank; PRA/FCA; FSCS £85,000 | Prestige UK; diaspora banking |
| UAE, China and others | HBL branches | Branch network: UAE, China (Beijing, 2021), Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Singapore, Bahrain, Kenya | International coverage; Dubai lounge |

Separately: Habib Bank AG Zurich is an independent Habib-family Swiss bank (FINMA-supervised), split from HBL at the 1974 nationalisation — the two must not be conflated. The UK lineage: London branch (1961) → Habib-Allied International Bank (2001/02) → Habibsons Bank → renamed HBL Bank UK in 2018. Exits: New York (licence surrendered 2017; wind-down completed 31 March 2020), Afghanistan, Mauritius, Lebanon, Belgium, Turkey, Hong Kong.

## Strengths

The scale and capital of the country's largest private-sector banking franchise: profit before tax Rs 148.1bn (+23%), net profit Rs 66.8bn (+16%) in FY2025. Anchor shareholder AKFED (56.58%) gives strategic stability. A ranking nuance: 2025–26 league tables put UBL ahead by assets after its Silkbank merger, while HBL remains the largest private-sector bank by franchise. The unique Roshan Digital Account diaspora channel; an extensive lounge network; a full product line from deposits to funds and bancassurance.

## Where it falls short

Prestige-specific AUM and client numbers are undisclosed, so segment depth cannot be verified publicly. No publicly advertised DPM, estate planning or family office. Thresholds and lounge infrastructure are oriented to Pakistan and its diaspora; deposits at overseas branches fall outside DPC cover.

In sum: HBL Prestige is priority banking at the top of Pakistan's leading private-sector franchise, with a strong diaspora channel, but without a formally advertised classic private-banking offer.

Basically a quarterly average of PKR 5m in a current account or PKR 15m in savings, with alternatives via mutual funds, a mortgage, government securities, or a Roshan Digital Account from USD 50,000. For HBL Bank UK, £200,000.
