## Concept

**Citi Private Bank** is the top tier of Citi Wealth inside Citigroup: banking for HNW and UHNW clients with an emphasis on international booking. **Type**: a private bank within a US universal banking group. The tiers below are Citigold and Citigold Private Client. Citi Wealth is led globally by [Andy Sieg](https://www.citigroup.com/global/about-us/leadership) (since September 2023); since January 2025 the standalone global-head role for the private bank has been replaced by four regional heads. Citigroup is listed on the NYSE (ticker C).

## History and evolution

The group traces its history to 1812 (City Bank of New York); a dedicated Private Banking Group was created in 1986, and in 2021 the private bank [merged with the consumer wealth franchises](https://www.privatebank.citibank.com/) into a single Citi Wealth unit. Between 2021 and 2024 Citi [exited consumer banking in 13 markets](https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/companies-markets/banking-finance/citi-to-exit-consumer-business-in-13-markets) — China, India, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, Poland, Russia and others — but the institutional and private banking businesses were explicitly kept: affluent and wealthy clients were concentrated into four global wealth hubs — Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE and London.

In September 2025 about US$80bn of Citi Wealth client assets moved to [BlackRock management](https://www.blackrock.com/corporate/newsroom/media/press-releases/citi-portfolio-solutions-powered-by-blackrock) via Citi Portfolio Solutions. Scale: over US$1 trillion of client balances, including US$635bn of client investment assets (mid-2025); per Bloomberg estimates, the bank serves roughly a quarter of the world's billionaires and more than 1,500 family offices.

> 🍓 Deposit protection depends on the booking entity: Citibank, N.A. (US) — [FDIC up to US$250,000](https://www.fdic.gov/resources/deposit-insurance/understanding-deposit-insurance/), and deposits booked at non-US branches are generally not FDIC-covered; Citibank UK Limited and the London branch — FSCS (£120,000 from 1 December 2025); Jersey — £50,000; Switzerland — esisuisse CHF 100,000; Citibank Europe plc (including the Luxembourg branch) — Irish DGS €100,000; Singapore — SDIC S$100,000, SGD-denominated deposits only.

## Regulation

- **OCC / Federal Reserve** — Citibank, N.A. (US); investment products via Citigroup Global Markets Inc. (FINRA/SIPC);
- **PRA / FCA** — Citibank, N.A., London Branch, and Citibank UK Limited;
- **JFSC** — the Jersey branch (registered business name Citi International Personal Bank);
- **FINMA** — Citibank (Switzerland) AG plus the Citibank, N.A. branches in Zurich and Geneva (all present in the [current FINMA register](https://www.finma.ch/en/~/media/finma/dokumente/bewilligungstraeger/pdf/beh.pdf));
- **Central Bank of Ireland / ECB** — Citibank Europe plc (Dublin) with a Luxembourg branch (CSSF-registered);
- **MAS** — the Citibank, N.A. Singapore branch (for CPB); Citigold clients sit in the separate Citibank Singapore Limited;
- **HKMA / SFC** — the Hong Kong branch;
- **DFSA** — the DIFC office in Dubai.
## Source of funds and compliance

Onboarding follows the global-bank standard: documented [source of funds and source of wealth](https://wiki.private.law/source-of-funds) and CRS/FATCA self-certification at each booking centre. Regional context matters: after Singapore's 2023 S$3bn laundering case, the PBIG industry group issued guidance on faster account opening with a complete source-of-wealth file, and the DFSA's thematic review of DIFC private banks flagged weaknesses precisely in corroborating source of funds for high-risk clients.

Group-level supervisory backdrop: the 2020 OCC and Federal Reserve consent orders, with a US$400m OCC penalty, remain in force; July 2024 added US$135.6m and an amended order, and in December 2025 the [OCC terminated the July 2024 amendment](https://www.occ.gov/static/enforcement-actions/eaAA-ENF-2025-64.pdf) — the core 2020 requirements still stand.

> 💡 Prepare the source-of-wealth file before applying: sale of a business, dividends, inheritance, tax status. The review logic is covered in the guide on [documenting source of funds](https://wiki.private.law/source-of-funds).

## Who it serves

- **The officially published threshold** is set on total net worth: [US$10 million for North America and Asia-Pacific, US$25 million for EMEA and Latin America](https://www.privatebank.citibank.com/private-banking-faq);
- unofficial estimates put the investable minimum at US$5–10m depending on market and year; dedicated family-office services reportedly start around US$100m;
- **international clients** from around 100 jurisdictions, booked across ten centres;
- **family offices** — a dedicated Global Family Office Group.
## Services

### Wealth management

- discretionary and advisory portfolio management, portfolio analytics;
- capital-markets access and alternatives: hedge funds, co-investments, sustainable investing.
### Lending and treasury

- [investment finance](https://wiki.private.law/lombard-lending) against securities, home financing, commercial real-estate financing;

- **Citi Trust**: trust and estate planning (the group's trust roots date to 1820; first overseas trust company in 1960);

## Entities and booking centres

Citi Private Bank describes its network as [10 global booking centres](https://www.citigroup.com/rcs/citigpa/storage/public/investor-day/citi-ID26-wealth-presentation.pdf) with offices across 20 countries.

| Jurisdiction | Legal entity | Format and supervisor | Role for the client |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| US | Citibank, N.A. (+ Citigroup Global Markets Inc.) | national bank, OCC/Fed; broker FINRA/SIPC | domestic market and booking centre, ~19 offices |
| UK | Citibank, N.A., London Branch; Citibank UK Limited | branch + subsidiary, PRA/FCA | international booking centre |
| Jersey | Citibank, N.A., Jersey Branch (Citi International Personal Bank) | branch, JFSC | classic non-resident booking centre |
| Switzerland | Citibank (Switzerland) AG + Citibank, N.A. branches (Zurich, Geneva) | subsidiary and branches, FINMA | booking centre |
| EU / Luxembourg | Citibank Europe plc (Dublin), Luxembourg branch | CBI/ECB, CSSF registration | EU hub since 2017; offices in Paris, Madrid, Milan, Frankfurt |
| Singapore | Citibank, N.A., Singapore Branch | branch, MAS | Asia booking centre (Citigold sits in Citibank Singapore Ltd) |
| Hong Kong | Citibank, N.A., Hong Kong Branch | branch, HKMA/SFC | Asia booking centre |
| UAE | DIFC office | DFSA | one of the four retained global wealth hubs |

Canada is served through Citibank Canada (a Schedule II bank). The Bahamas no longer appears in the current office list. The choice of centre follows the usual [booking-centre](https://wiki.private.law/booking-centres) logic: the account jurisdiction determines the applicable rules and protection.

## Strengths

- ten booking centres and clients from roughly a hundred jurisdictions — rare coverage for mobile families;
- niche practices few houses have: aviation, art, sports;
- Citi's institutional depth: capital markets, FX, treasury;
- a dedicated Global Family Office Group with 1,500+ family-office clients.
## Where it does not fit

- fortunes below the published thresholds (US$10m / US$25m by region) — the next tier down is Citigold Private Client;
- clients needing a retail network in the 2021–2024 exit markets — consumer banking there is closed;
- portfolios centred on crypto assets — no dedicated custody offering;
- clients for whom a clean supervisory record is critical: the 2020 consent orders are still in force.
Citi Private Bank is the most networked of the US private banks for an international client: the strengths are booking geography, family offices and niche lending; the weaknesses are a high published threshold and a live supervisory backdrop.

## Q/A

### Thresholds and geography

### What minimum capital does Citi Private Bank require?

The bank publishes a net-worth threshold: US$10 million for North America and Asia-Pacific, US$25 million for EMEA and Latin America. Industry estimates put the investable minimum at US$5–10 million depending on the market; family-office services start around US$100 million. The final decision rests with the bank.

### Citi closed consumer banking in my country — did the private bank leave too?

No: the 2021–2024 exits concerned consumer banking in 13 markets. The private bank and institutional businesses were kept, and wealthy clients were moved into four hubs — Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE and London. Booking is also available in Switzerland, Jersey and Luxembourg.

### What does deposit insurance cover?

It depends on the entity: US — FDIC US$250,000 (deposits at foreign branches are not covered); UK — FSCS £120,000; Jersey — £50,000; Switzerland — esisuisse CHF 100,000; Citibank Europe plc — Irish DGS €100,000; Singapore — SDIC S$100,000 on SGD deposits only; Hong Kong — DPS HK$800,000. Custody securities remain the client's property.

### Structure and supervision

### What did Ida Liu's exit and the move to four regions change?

Since January 2025 there is no single global head of the private bank — four regional heads report to Citi Wealth chief Andy Sieg. For clients this changes the escalation line rather than the product shelf: the goal of the reorganisation is growth through regional teams and banker hiring in Asia.

### Are the 2020 regulator consent orders still in force?

Yes. The 2020 OCC and Federal Reserve orders, with a US$400m penalty, remain in force; the additional 2024 measures (US$135.6m) were partly lifted in December 2025. These are group-level data- and risk-management requirements, not restrictions on serving private-bank clients.
