## Concept

The CIMB Private Banking brand covers two distinct lanes that sources often conflate.

Lane one is wholesale: CIMB Private Banking proper, the group's HNW franchise active since around 2002 inside CIMB Investment Bank Berhad within Group Wholesale Banking. It is classic private banking — a dedicated relationship manager, investment-banking product access and credit solutions — and Asiamoney named it Best Domestic Private Bank Malaysia in 2020–2022. Since 24 January 2025 CIMB Investment Bank has been led by CEO Nor Masliza Sulaiman; the Singapore private-banking desk is reportedly headed by Debra Tran (reported, unverified).

Lane two is consumer: the affluent ladder inside Group Consumer Banking (CEO Haniz Nazlan). The base tier is CIMB Preferred; above it, the new CIMB Private Wealth tier launched in Indonesia in January 2026 and in Malaysia on 20 July 2026, with Singapore and Thailand targeted by end-2026. This is mass-affluent premium banking with public terms and conditions (T&C), not strict private banking.

> 🍓 Deposit protection. Malaysia: PIDM covers RM 250,000 per depositor per member bank; CIMB Bank and CIMB Islamic are separate members, so combined coverage across both can reach RM 500,000. Singapore: SDIC covers S$ 100,000 (since 1 April 2024). Indonesia: LPS covers Rp 2 billion per depositor per bank.

## Regulation

CIMB Group Holdings Berhad is listed on Bursa Malaysia and designated a domestic systemically important bank (D-SIB) by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM); the largest shareholder is the state fund Khazanah Nasional at about 21.6%. CIMB Bank Berhad is licensed under the FSA 2013 and CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad under the IFSA 2013, both supervised by BNM and both PIDM members. CIMB Investment Bank Berhad is supervised by BNM and the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC). CIMB Bank Singapore is a Singapore branch of CIMB Bank Berhad holding an MAS Full Bank licence — not a locally incorporated subsidiary; PT Bank CIMB Niaga is regulated by the OJK and CIMB Thai by the Bank of Thailand.

Compliance record: in 2019 BNM imposed compounds and administrative monetary penalties totalling about RM 9.8 million on CIMB Bank and about RM 5.1 million on CIMB Islamic for customer-information disclosure failures; on 30 January 2024 BNM imposed RM 600,000 over statistical reporting; on 29 July 2024 penalties totalled RM 760,000 over e-banking downtime. SC Malaysia actions concerned individuals formerly with CIMB Investment Bank, not the bank itself. CIMB Bank was not among the [nine institutions penalised by MAS on 4 July 2025](https://www.mas.gov.sg/regulation/enforcement/enforcement-actions?page=1&rows=All).

## Source of wealth

The core clientele is Malaysian SME and corporate owners, professionals (doctors, lawyers, senior executives), plantation and commodity fortunes, and property developers. Demand for Islamic wealth planning is significant, and regional ASEAN clients are served through the Singapore platform. Standard [source of funds](https://wiki.private.law/source-of-funds) verification applies.

> 💡 Entry thresholds. Malaysia: CIMB Preferred requires RM 250,000 in AUM (or financing routes); CIMB Private Wealth Status requires RM 1,000,000 in AUM plus RM 500,000 in combined wealth-management and CASA balances (loan-based alternative: RM 3 million cumulative lending plus RM 500,000). Singapore: Preferred at S$ 250,000, the private tier at around S$ 1 million (reported, unverified). Indonesia (CIMB Niaga Preferred): Rp 500 million total relationship balance. The generic “RM 3 million Malaysian PB minimum” circulating in reviews is not CIMB's headline threshold — wholesale CIMB Private Banking publishes no single minimum.

## Who it serves

Malaysian HNW families and business owners who want investment-banking expertise and credit solutions within one group; clients combining conventional and Islamic banking; regional ASEAN clients booking in Singapore. For the mass-affluent segment, the Preferred and Private Wealth tiers offer fixed, published thresholds.

## Services

A relationship-manager model backed by a Chief Investment Office: unit trusts, bonds and sukuk, structured products; discretionary portfolio management (DPM) including ESG mandates via external managers; credit solutions including overseas property financing (Australia, London) and corporate-finance advisory; [lombard lending](https://wiki.private.law/lombard-lending) against investment portfolios; conventional and Islamic private trust and estate planning through the group's trustee arms; a full Shariah-compliant suite via CIMB Islamic, including wasiat through the As-Salihin partnership.

## Entities

| Jurisdiction | Legal entity | Form and supervision | Role |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |

## Strengths

Malaysia's second-largest bank by assets behind Maybank and the fifth-largest banking group in ASEAN: FY2024 total assets of RM 755.1 billion and a record net profit of RM 7.73 billion (+10.7%); FY2025 deposits of RM 524.4 billion with a CET1 ratio of 14.3%. CIMB Niaga closed FY2024 with a record net profit of Rp 6.8 trillion. A rare combination of full-fledged Islamic and conventional private banking in one group, in-house trustees with history since 1988/1994, and ASEAN-wide coverage. Reported group wealth AUM is around RM 250 billion (2025), with a Forward30 target to double it by 2030 (reported, unverified).

## Where it falls short

CIMB does not disclose standalone private-banking AUM or client counts (post-2016), so the franchise's scale can only be compared indirectly. Booking geography is limited to Southeast Asia: clients needing a Swiss or European booking centre will not fit. Finally, the “RM 3 million” figure from unofficial reviews does not match CIMB's published thresholds — actual terms depend on the lane (Preferred, Private Wealth or wholesale private banking).

Bottom line: CIMB Private Banking is the regional HNW franchise of Malaysia's second bank, with a strong Islamic lane and an investment-banking backbone, while the parallel Preferred → Private Wealth ladder covers the affluent segment at transparent published thresholds.

## Q/A

### How does CIMB Private Banking differ from CIMB Preferred and CIMB Private Wealth?

They are separate lanes. Wholesale CIMB Private Banking is the HNW franchise inside CIMB Investment Bank (Group Wholesale Banking). Preferred and the new Private Wealth tier are consumer statuses in Group Consumer Banking with fixed thresholds.

### What is the minimum entry threshold?

CIMB Preferred in Malaysia starts at RM 250,000 in AUM; CIMB Private Wealth Status requires RM 1,000,000 in AUM plus RM 500,000 in combined balances (with a lending-based alternative). No single public minimum exists for wholesale private banking; the “RM 3 million” figure is not an official CIMB threshold.

### Are CIMB deposits insured?

In Malaysia PIDM covers up to RM 250,000 per depositor per member bank, with CIMB Bank and CIMB Islamic as separate members. Singapore applies SDIC coverage of S$ 100,000 (since 1 April 2024), and Indonesia applies LPS coverage of Rp 2 billion.

### Does CIMB offer Islamic private banking?

Yes: CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad provides a full Shariah-compliant suite — from sukuk and Islamic funds to Islamic trusts via CIMB Islamic Trustee Berhad and wasiat through the As-Salihin partnership.

### Does CIMB disclose private-banking assets and client numbers?

No: standalone AUM and client counts have not been published since 2016. The reference point is group wealth AUM of around RM 250 billion (2025) with a Forward30 target to double by 2030 — reported, not officially confirmed.
