The modern group took shape in 2007, in the merger of the Bank of New York with Mellon Financial. It is a global systemically important bank (G-SIB) and the world's largest custodian: as of 31 March 2026 it held roughly $59.4 trillion in assets under custody and/or administration and about $2.1 trillion under management. The group is led by Robin Vince. In June 2024, on its 240th anniversary, "BNY Mellon" rebranded as BNY, organised around BNY Investments, BNY Wealth and BNY Pershing; the parent company's legal name was left unchanged. > 🍓 BNY is an infrastructure bank: custody, settlement, asset servicing and clearing through Pershing, plus asset management (BNY Investments) and private wealth (BNY Wealth). Its value to an owner of capital lies in the safekeeping and administration of large portfolios; everyday accounts and boutique private banking are left to other players. ## History The bank grew out of the Bank of New York, which Alexander Hamilton founded in 1784 — the oldest banking company in the United States, and among the first stocks to trade on the New York Stock Exchange. The modern structure took shape in 2007, when the Bank of New York combined with Pittsburgh's Mellon Financial to create BNY Mellon. At the time of the merger the group serviced more than $18 trillion in assets and over $1 trillion under management; over the following two decades the custody book grew roughly threefold, to today's nearly $59.4 trillion. The custody business runs on scale: the more assets on the books, the cheaper each operation and the more resilient the settlement infrastructure, which is why the industry has historically tended toward consolidation. In June 2024 the brand was shortened to BNY, keeping the legal name The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation and gathering the client-facing units around BNY Investments, BNY Wealth, BNY Pershing and BNY Markets. ## Divisions - **BNY (asset servicing / custody)** — safekeeping and administration of securities, settlements, corporate trust, treasury operations. In this line the bank is the world's largest tri-party agent and a key settlement hub for US government bonds. - **BNY Investments** — asset management. - **BNY Wealth** (formerly BNY Mellon Wealth Management) — private wealth management for affluent clients: investment, planning, trusts. - **BNY Pershing** — clearing and custody for brokers, independent investment advisers (RIAs) and asset managers. ## Use Cases - **Custody of large portfolios** of securities and fund/family-structure assets, with institutional reliability. - **BNY Wealth** — wealth management and trust/estate planning for affluent clients (predominantly US-linked). - **Infrastructure for asset managers** — Pershing as custodian/clearing for independent investment advisers (RIAs) and brokers. ## Application for clients and family office > 🔗 **Related** > [family office](https://wiki.private.law/en/family-office) · [succession of foreign accounts and brokerage portfolios](https://wiki.private.law/en/foreign-accounts-succession) · [private investor infrastructure](https://wiki.private.law/en/investment-platforms) For an owner of large capital, BNY most often works at the infrastructure level: custody of a large portfolio, servicing the assets of a trust or fund, clearing a manager's trades through Pershing. Direct private service runs through BNY Wealth — investment, trust and estate planning, predominantly US-linked. The typical configuration: the portfolio sits in custody at BNY, an external RIA manages the trades, and Pershing provides that adviser's market access and clearing. The client gets a single record across different brokerage relationships and one point of control over the assets. In practice the bank slots into an existing structure: a single custodian consolidates scattered brokerage accounts, and their succession is planned in advance. From the client's side this is covered in the family office material and in succession of foreign accounts and brokerage portfolios; the map of venues for a private investor is gathered in the private investor infrastructure overview. ## Important Notes > 🔗 **Related** > [neobanks](https://wiki.private.law/en/neobanks) · [banks](https://wiki.private.law/en/banks) - BNY provides custody of large portfolios and of the assets of funds and family structures with institutional reliability. A business's everyday operating accounts are handled by neobanks and universal banks by jurisdiction; for trade flows, a corporate account at a universal bank is the fit. - Standard Tier-1 requirements: source of wealth and funds, CRS/FATCA, sanctions screening. ## Regulation and role in the infrastructure BNY is on the list of global systemically important banks (G-SIBs): it is subject to heightened capital and liquidity requirements and to supervision by the US Federal Reserve. Its importance comes from its role in market infrastructure — a critical part of US government-debt turnover passes through the bank's settlement systems. G-SIB status adds a capital buffer, recovery and resolution plans and a regular Fed stress test; for the client this translates into predictability of the infrastructure on which their assets rest. BNY is the dominant tri-party agent: around 80% of that segment is serviced on its platform, and it is the world's largest venue for financing Treasuries through repo. The US government-bond market is moving to mandatory central clearing: after the SEC's deadline extension, cash trades fall under the requirement from the end of 2026 and repo from mid-2027. Trades cleared through FICC are still settled on BNY's tri-party platform. > ⚙️ Custody and deposits are built differently. In a custody account the assets are recorded as the client's property and separated from the bank's balance sheet — in an insolvency they do not fall into the bankruptcy estate; a bank deposit, by contrast, becomes the bank's liability to the depositor. That is why the figure "$59.4 trillion in custody" describes the volume of clients' administered assets and is not equal to money on the bank's balance sheet. ## Frequently asked questions > 🔗 **Related** > [private banking](https://wiki.private.law/en/private-banking) **Is this a private bank?** BNY is first and foremost a custodian and asset manager; its private arm is run by BNY Wealth. For the classic boutique format, see private banking. **What does "largest custodian" mean?** BNY safekeeps and administers roughly $59.4 trillion in assets (as of 31 March 2026): the recording, safekeeping and settlement of securities for institutional and private clients. It differs from a bank deposit in that the assets belong to the client and are segregated from the bank's balance sheet. **Are BNY and BNY Mellon the same thing?** Yes. In 2024 "BNY Mellon" rebranded as "BNY". ## Evolution > 🔗 **Related** > [tokenization of assets](https://wiki.private.law/en/tokenization-rwa) · [Anchorage Digital](https://wiki.private.law/en/anchorage-digital) · [banks by jurisdiction](https://wiki.private.law/en/banks) · [private banking](https://wiki.private.law/en/private-banking) · [family office](https://wiki.private.law/en/family-office) · [succession of foreign accounts](https://wiki.private.law/en/foreign-accounts-succession) · [how a trust works](https://wiki.private.law/en/trust-basics) · [J.P. Morgan](https://wiki.private.law/en/jpmorgan) In recent years BNY has been shifting from the role of a "vault" toward a technology platform. In 2021 the bank carved out a separate Digital Assets Unit, and in October 2022 it became the first US systemically important bank to launch custody of crypto assets, letting some clients hold bitcoin and ether in the same perimeter as traditional securities; in parallel it runs asset-tokenization projects and has rolled out its own enterprise AI platform. Institutional safekeeping of crypto assets is thus emerging from the grey zone — specialised players such as Anchorage Digital work alongside it. For family structures this means that a single counterparty gradually covers both classic securities custody and the recording of new asset classes under one operational and compliance perimeter. > 🍓 The working frame is simple: BNY is institutional custody and asset servicing on a global scale; the private perimeter for the client is opened by BNY Wealth, and the infrastructure for managers by Pershing. Everyday accounts and payments are left to universal banks and neobanks. ## Sources - [BNY: official group site (AUC/A and AUM figures)](https://www.bny.com/) - [BNY: Q1 2026 results, investor relations](https://www.bny.com/investorrelations) 📎 Need the full picture?
