## Concept

**BNP Paribas Wealth Management** is the private banking business of the BNP Paribas group, sitting inside the Investment & Protection Services (IPS) division alongside Cardif insurance and BNP Paribas Asset Management. **Type**: a private bank within a universal banking group — clients get both wealth management and the balance sheet of a major bank. The group describes itself as the [number one private bank in the Eurozone](https://www.lobbyregister.bundestag.de/media/6e/8a/821075/universal-registration-document-annual-financial-report-2025.pdf). The unit is headquartered at 1, boulevard Haussmann, Paris; its CEO is [Vincent Lecomte](https://group.bnpparibas/en/press-release/bnp-paribas-announces-appointments). BNP Paribas is listed on Euronext Paris.

## History and evolution

Today's footprint was shaped by the 2009–2010 Fortis deal, which brought BNP Paribas Fortis in Belgium, BGL in Luxembourg and Fortis Banque (Suisse), folded into the Swiss operation. In 2021 the unit moved into the newly created IPS division. In February 2023 the group [sold Bank of the West to BMO for US$16.3bn](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/927971/000119312522296599/d358851dex991.htm), exiting US retail and onshore wealth.

2024–2026 brought a perimeter reshuffle. In October 2025 the bank [completed the acquisition of HSBC's private banking business in Germany](https://news.europawire.eu/bnp-paribas-expands-wealth-management-footprint-in-germany-by-acquiring-hsbcs-private-banking-division/eu-press-release/2024/09/25/12/48/14/141023/) — trade press estimates put it at roughly €50bn of assets and the fourth-largest private bank in Germany. In Switzerland, BNP Paribas (Suisse) SA was absorbed in a 2025 cross-border merger: the franchise now operates as [branches of BNP Paribas SA in Geneva (Lancy) and Zurich](https://www.bnpparibas.ch/en/legal-information/federal-financial-services-act/) under FINMA supervision. Monaco was exited — a portfolio of about €2.5bn [transferred to CFM Indosuez](https://ca-indosuez.com/press/press-releases/cfm-indosuez-wealth-management-finalises-acquisition-of-bnp-paribas-wealth-management-clients-in-monaco), finalised on 24 March 2026; Morocco's BMCI is in sale talks. A Nordics entry was announced in October 2026.

Assets under management reached [€517bn at end-2025](https://www.lobbyregister.bundestag.de/media/6e/8a/821075/universal-registration-document-annual-financial-report-2025.pdf), up from €462bn a year earlier, and around €543bn by mid-2026. The unit operates in 17 countries with roughly 7,000 staff.

> 🍓 Deposit protection depends on the booking entity: BNP Paribas SA (France) — [FGDR, €100,000](https://mabanque.bnpparibas/fr/reglementation/fonds-de-garantie-des-depots-et-de-resolution), which also covers SA branches elsewhere in the EU; BGL BNP Paribas (Luxembourg) — FGDL, €100,000; the Swiss branches — [esisuisse, CHF 100,000](https://www.bnpparibas.ch/en/legal-information/federal-financial-services-act/); Singapore — SDIC, S$100,000, and only on SGD-denominated deposits.

## Regulation

The supervisory map across key entities:

- **ACPR / ECB** — the French parent BNP Paribas SA;
- **CSSF / ECB** — BGL BNP Paribas S.A. in Luxembourg;
- **FINMA** — the Geneva and Zurich branches as branches of a foreign bank;
- **HKMA** and **MAS** — the Hong Kong and Singapore branches (Singapore holds a [Qualifying Full Bank](https://eservices.mas.gov.sg/fid/institution?category=Qualifying%20Full%20Bank) licence);
- **DFSA** — the DIFC branch in Dubai;
- domestic markets — NBB (Belgium, BNP Paribas Fortis), Banca d'Italia and Consob (BNL), Banco de España, KNF (Poland), BRSA (TEB, Turkey).
## Source of funds and compliance

The bank applies strict [source-of-funds and source-of-wealth](https://wiki.private.law/source-of-funds) review: sale of a business, dividends, inheritance, years of declared income. The group has dated supervisory episodes that shape onboarding depth: in 2024 the [CSSF fined BGL BNP Paribas €3m](https://www.lesechos.fr/finance-marches/banque-assurances/bnp-paribas-ecope-dune-amende-de-3-millions-deuros-au-luxembourg-2106666) for serious AML/CFT shortcomings including enhanced source-of-funds due diligence, and in 2022 Hong Kong's SFC banned a former unit banker for 27 months over suitability failings. In practice that means a demanding onboarding and periodic documentary requests.

> 💡 Prepare the source-of-wealth file before applying: the larger the sum and the more complex the structure, the further compliance traces the chain back to the origin. See the guide on [documenting source of funds](https://wiki.private.law/source-of-funds).

## Who it serves

- **HNW and UHNW clients**: the only officially published threshold is in Asia — [from €5 million in liquid assets](https://wealthmanagement.bnpparibas/asia/en/about-you/wealth-management-services.html);

## Entities and booking centres

The format differs by country: some markets are run through subsidiaries, others through branches of the French entity, and some have been exited altogether.

| Jurisdiction | Legal entity | Format and supervisor | Role for the client |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| France | BNP Paribas SA, Banque Privée | parent bank, ACPR/ECB | domestic market, ~200 centres |
| Luxembourg | BGL BNP Paribas S.A. | subsidiary, CSSF/ECB | international booking centre |
| Switzerland | BNP Paribas SA branches (Geneva-Lancy, Zurich) | branches of a foreign bank, FINMA | international booking centre |
| Germany | BNP Paribas S.A. Niederlassung Deutschland | branch, BaFin/ECB + ACPR | domestic private banking, incl. the acquired HSBC business |
| Belgium | BNP Paribas Fortis SA/NV | subsidiary, NBB/ECB | domestic market |
| Italy | Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL) | subsidiary, Banca d'Italia/Consob | domestic market |
| Spain | BNP Paribas SA, Sucursal en España | branch, Banco de España/CNMV | domestic market and LatAm-linked clients |
| Turkey | TEB (Türk Ekonomi Bankası) | TEB Holding 50/50 joint venture, BRSA | domestic private banking |

| Singapore | BNP Paribas, Singapore Branch | branch, MAS (Qualifying Full Bank) | Asia booking centre |
| UAE | BNP Paribas SA (DIFC Branch) | branch, DFSA | Middle East hub; booking in Geneva, Luxembourg or Asia |
| Monaco | — | exit completed March 2026 | clients transferred to CFM Indosuez |
| US | — | no onshore private bank since the Bank of the West sale (2023) | — |

Domestic businesses also operate in Poland (BNP Paribas Bank Polska), the Netherlands, Taiwan and Thailand (onshore launch 2024); Morocco's BMCI is in sale negotiations. Booking logic follows the general rules of [account booking centres](https://wiki.private.law/booking-centres).

## Strengths

- the scale of the Eurozone's largest bank, with access to its balance sheet, capital markets and credit;
- flexible choice of booking jurisdiction: Geneva, Luxembourg, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai;
- strong domestic platforms in France, Belgium and Italy — rare coverage for EU residents;
- a developed entrepreneur and family-office segment.
## Where it does not fit

- clients who need a US onshore private bank: the group has none since selling Bank of the West;
- Monaco residents — relationships have moved to CFM Indosuez;
- portfolios centred on crypto assets — no dedicated custody offering;
- fortunes below the thresholds — start from the official €5m in Asia or the reported ~€1.5m global minimum.
BNP Paribas Wealth Management is a European universal bank with full international booking: strongest in the EU and on the Europe–Asia corridor, but without a US platform and after targeted perimeter pruning in Monaco and Morocco.

## Q/A

### Thresholds, booking and deposit protection

### What minimum capital is needed to get in?

Only the Asian unit publishes a threshold — from €5 million in liquid assets. For France, industry reviews cite entry from €250k and dedicated teams from €5m; the global minimum is estimated around €1.5m. The final decision is always individual and depends on the client's country of residence and wealth profile.

### I am not an EU resident. Where can I book an account?

The group's international booking centres are Geneva, Luxembourg, Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai (via the DIFC). The jurisdiction is agreed with the banker and depends on residence, currencies and the products required — not every instrument is available from every centre.

### What does the deposit guarantee cover?

It depends on the entity: France and its EU branches — FGDR €100,000; Luxembourg (BGL) — FGDL €100,000; Switzerland — esisuisse CHF 100,000; Singapore — SDIC S$100,000, SGD deposits only. Custody securities are not covered by the schemes, but they remain the client's property and are returned in a bank failure rather than shared among creditors.

### Deals and supervision

### What did the acquisition of HSBC's German private bank change?

The deal closed in October 2025: trade press estimates roughly €50bn of assets and ~300 staff, making the bank the fourth-largest private bank in Germany. For clients this strengthens the domestic German platform rather than changing international booking.

### Luxembourg's BGL was fined by the CSSF. Is that a risk for clients?

The €3m fine in 2024 concerned AML/CFT shortcomings, including enhanced source-of-funds diligence — not the safety of assets. The practical consequence for a client is a deeper onboarding and more documentary requests, both at entry and during the relationship.
